LAHORE: A mediocre card of seven races will be gone through when the 16th day/night Lahore Summer Meeting gets under way at the Racecourse here on Saturday.

The extreme hot temperature gradually sliding downwards and the racecourse now seems humming with equine activities.

Leading trainers and riders seem to have buckled themselves up while training and exercising their riding stock in preparation for the forth-coming winter meetings which begin with the staging of cup events named after the national war heroes and the recipients of the highest gallantry award, the Nishan-i-Haider, next month.

The number of participating horses in races is also on the rise. In all, 60 acceptors are to take part in Saturday’s races, five to be gone over the sprinting distance of 900 metres and two over 1,000 metres.

Meanwhile, leading jockey Shahid Rehman, who has taken up dual responsibility of training and riding horses belonging to the stable of Makhdum Syed Ahmad Mahmud, has fully recovered from injury sustained in a fall during a race last year.

He is seen on the track work but has put on weight. He has to shed extra pounds to get fit.

The first race will be held at 4.30pm.
