LAHORE: The provincial police chief late on Thursday transferred two district police officers (DPOs) directing them to report to the Central Police Office (CPO).

According to notifications, Mandi Bahauddin DPO Amir Taimoor and Bahawalnagar DPO Athar Ismael Amjad were transferred and made officers on special duty (OSDs).

Lahore Superintendent of Police (SP) Syed Junaid Arshad was transferred and posted Mandi Bahauddin DPO while Lahore Ring Road Police Commandant Syed Muntazir Mehdi was transferred and posted Bahawalnagar DPO.Lahore SP Security Abdul Qadir Qamar was transferred and posted Chiniot DPO against an existing vacancy. The post fell vacant a couple of days ago after the Punjab government surrendered Chiniot DPO Munir Zia Rao to the federal government over ‘corruption’ complaints against him.

Sources privy to the development told Dawn that Mr Arshad got a district adjacent to his home district and was not even interviewed by the chief minister. They said Mr Qamar, who was also interviewed for the post of Mandi Bahauddin DPO by the chief minister on July 13 and was posted Lahore SP Security few days ago, got Chiniot posting.

Mr Qamar and Mr Arshad were interviewed for the post of Mandi Bahauddin DPO; Muntazir Mehdi and Dr Inamur Rehman were interviewed for the post of Chiniot; while SP Syed Hashmat Kamal and SSP Shahzad Akbar were called for interview for the post of Bahawalnagar. Mr Akbar skipped the interview held on July 13.

Sources said Mr Arshad and Mr Qamar were approved for districts on the recommendations of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat and the inspector general was bypassed in those two postings.

They said the Mandi Bahauddin DPO was transferred on reports of alleged ‘corruption’, but the Bahawalnagar DPO was made the OSD as ‘victimisation’. Despite several at tempts, DIG Farooq Mazhar was not available for comment over the corruption allegation against the police officers.
