ISLAMABAD: Asian governments must make tough choices in energy investments that can provide affordable energy while meeting environmental objectives, especially on climate change, said an ADB study on Thursday.
Although some trade-offs are inevitable, these can be reduced by reforms to energy pricing, technological innovation, and access to financing for environmentally sustainable growth, according to the study carried out by ADB’s independent evaluation department.
ADB forecasts that developing Asia’s share of global energy consumption would remain higher than its share of the global economy.
The electricity outlay is projected to fall by about 38pc in Pakistan by 2025 as compared to 70pc in China, 67pc in Indonesia, 56pc in India, 50pc in Vietnam, and 20pc in Thailand.
The evaluation study recommended that ADB should review its energy strategy for Pakistan including reform achievements, eliminating structural problems, and explore options such as hydropower development, natural gas pipelines, and further privatisation.
