Few years back, couple of professors at Harvard wrote a paper, criticizing Israel for occupation of Palestinian territory, Harvard University did not publish the paper.

During Jordanian and PLO conflict, Zia was only a Brigadier and deployed for training assignment only (non-combat role). Also, Yaasir Arafat (leader of PLO) never blamed Zia for Palestinian killings.He even visited Pakistan three times during Zia's regime. Most Pakistanis are caught up in conspiracy theories, these Pakistanis include the educated class as well. The only way to fight the injustice that is going on in Gaza is present it in a reasonable manner and not with a shrill voice. If you take an extreme stand than you become inconsequential and will have no impact. As the author of this piece indicates there are a lot of Jewish intellectuals that have been voicing their strong opposition to the brutal policies of Israel. It will be useful to form an alliance with these groups, in return we have to also speak out against extremists on our side, speak out against the violence perpetrated by these groups.

She has done a tremendous contribution in highlighting how Muslims and Pakistanis in particular give religious shade and meaning to every thing including world problems and issues - the causes of which have no relevance to religion. She has a balanced and educated mind to tell that Israeli and Palestinian tussle is a complex one and in reality more ethnic, historical than a religious issue. If it were so all Arab countries could have stood up to the side of Palestinians and at least help in terms of money and armaments. In fact, they are indifferent to Palestinians plight.

It is hard to understand by most of the world why many Muslims, particularly from Pakistan sense every problem on the face of this planet a religious issue. In this modern world religion has no part to play, and look after 9/11 too much religiosity is now intertwined with terrorism, barbarism and bigotry. Remember that most of 7 billion people in this world have no organized religion and even in those most do not believe at all in any religion and so show no religious frenzy and fervency as we mostly see in Muslims. In Pakistan show of religiosity heightens to madness and irrationality.
