LAHORE: Three police constables attached with two police officers were arrested on Tuesday after they appeared before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for recording their statements here at the Robert's Club.
Sources privy to the ongoing investigations into the Model Town killings told Dawn that Constable Mujahid, guard of an additional SP and Constable Kashif (a guard) and a driver, Constable Nadeem, who were attached with an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), were taken into custody after they were shown the footages in which they were firing on Pakistan Awami Tehreek activists.
Lahore Mujahid and Mobiles SP Abdul Raheem Sherazi, DSP Abdullah Jan, three SHOs and three Sub-Inspectors also appeared before the JIT.
Meanwhile, a district and sessions court directed the Joint Investigation Team to produce record of the case to proceed further on an application demanding registration of a murder case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, former law minister Rana Sanaullah and others.
Minhajul Quran Secretariat Administration Director Jawad Hamid filed the petition.
Model Town probe: Tribunal gets recording of CM-others talks
The Faisal Town station house officer (SHO) was directed on the last hearing to ensure production of the case record. However, he replied that the record was still with the JIT. At this the judge ordered the JIT to furnish the record on July 19.
The petitioner alleged the respondents were directly involved in killing innocent people and the police were reluctant to register a murder case against them.
He asked the court to order the police to book all respondents under murder charges.
