LAHORE: Former Test captain and fast bowling legend Waqar Younis is being tipped to take over as new head coach of national team in place of Moin Khan who is likely to be handed the chief selector’s job after the same was turned down by former skipper Rashid Latif last week.

Sources told Dawn that Waqar has already been in contact with the PCB and the 87-Test veteran has given his consent for the head coach’s job.

If these reports are to be believed, the advertisement published in newspapers on Friday for hiring the national team coaches can be regarded as mere eyewash.

Waqar, 42, was also a strong candidate for the post of head coach when the Zaka Ashraf-headed PCB gave advertisements for new coaches some three months ago during his second tenure which lasted less than a month.

It may be mentioned here that the PCB for the last many years has been ignoring the recommendations of the famous Justice Qayyum inquiry report into match-fixing in the year 2000, according to which none of the tainted players should be given any important role in the national team management.

The PCB, for some odd reason, has continued its communications and dealings with players like Saleem Malik, Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mushtaq Ahmed and Akram Raza all of whom have been mentioned in the Qayyum rerport.

The sources said that while Mushtaq is keen to join the PCB as one of the top coaches at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after his contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board ended following the World T20 in Bangladesh, Inzamam may also be selected as national team’s batting coach in the weeks to come.

Another tainted player Akram Raza has also featured on the PCB umpiring panel.

Sources further said that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has also surprisingly not raised any objections over the PCB’s decision of hiring the cricketing services of Waqar, Moin, Wasim and others in the recent past.
