MINGORA: A local PML-N activist was killed and his companion injured when unknown attackers opened fire on their car in Matta bazaar here on Wednesday.

Police said that local leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Gran Khan, a resident of Shakardara area of Matta, had gone to Matta bazaar along with his friend, Bacha Ali, where unknown attackers opened fire on their car. As a result, Gran Khan died on spot, while Mr Ali was injured. He was taken to civil hospital, Matta, where doctors referred him to Saidu Sharif hospital.

Police sources said that unknown persons had also killed the father of Gran Khan about two years ago when he was offering prayers in a mosque in Shakardara.

PAPER RESCHEDULED: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Swat, has rescheduled the Pakistan Studies paper of intermediate examinations in all nine centres falling in the limits of provincial assembly constituency, PK-86, Swat-VII, due to by-election on April 24.

The paper earlier scheduled for April 24 would now be held on May 15, according to a press release issued by the board here on Wednesday. It stated that intermediate examinations would start in Swat, Shangla and Buner districts from April 23.

However, the paper would be held as scheduled on May 24 in all other exam centres in Swat, Shangla and Buner, located outside PK-86. Swat deputy commissioner has also declared a local holiday on April 24 on account of the by-election.

CONGREGATION: The three-day Tableeghi congregation will start in Barikot here from today (Thursday). According to local preachers, thousands of people from different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would participate in the congregation.

Swat deputy commissioner Imtiaz Hussain said that 860 policemen would be deployed for security duty on the occasion. The district administration has completed security arrangements for the congregation, Mr Shah said, adding that a medical camp and control room would also be set up to assist the participants of the religious gathering. He said that the civil administration had announced a local holiday in Barikot tehsil and all schools would remain closed on Friday.
