RAWALPINDI: To avoid accidents during the construction work, the city district government Rawalpindi (CDGR) on Wednesday formed three committees to inspect construction work on the Metro Bus Project and see to it that safety measures are adopted by the contractors.

In 2013, during work at Marrir Chowk, a hydraulic rotary machine installed at the site collapsed, injuring a labourer and stalling work for a month.

Commissioner Zahid Saeed directed the district coordination officer (DCO), Sajid Zafar Dall, to form three committees to inspect work on daily basis so as to avoid any similar incident.

Each committee will include an official from the Rawal Town Municipal Administration (RTMA), the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), the traffic police and a representative of the contractor.

From Saddar to Committee Chowk, the committee will be led by the assistant commissioner of Cantonment. From Committee Chowk to Sixth Road, it will be led by the assistant commissioner for city, and from the Sixth Road to Faizabad, by the sub-registrar of the tehsil.

The commissioner and the metro bus project director, Zahid Saeed, told Dawn that the basic aim was to minimise problems faced by the commuters on Murree Road and to prevent accidents due to construction work.

He said the committees would prepare reports daily and submit them to the DCO and the commissioner.

If any problems are found, they will be solved at once.

He said work on the Islamabad section would begin on April 20.

“Islamabad traffic police have prepared a plan to divert traffic at Peshawar Mor during the construction of an intersection, 7th Avenue flyover and Jinnah Avenue.”
