KARACHI: Faizan Riaz played a superlative knock of 180 to inspire the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to an imposing 416-6 against the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on the opening day of the four-day Patron’s Trophy (Grade-II) cricket tournament match in Faisalabad on Thursday.

With the first innings restricted to 83 overs, CDA batsmen, led by Faizan, went on a run spree after SSGC skipper Asif Zakir had won the toss and decided to bowl first at the Iqbal Stadium.

Asif’s decision initially paid off as the CDA lost their captain Naved Malik, who was caught behind by Pakistan Under-19 side wicket-keeper Saifullah Khan Bangash, for a fourth-ball duck in the first over of the match.

The SSGC claimed two more wickets — of Mohammad Fahim (15) and Salman Haider (31) — by the time the total reached 65. Ali Sarfraz, the upcoming left-hander, then partnered Faizan in a fourth-wicket stand worth 62 before he was run out for a 52-ball 33.

Sohail Khan, another left-hander, then joined Faizan in a 182-run partnership in 162 minutes to put the CDA in full control. Sohail went when he offered a return to Usman Tariq after scoring 86 off 131 deliveries. His innings contained 12 boundaries.

Faizan was finally dismissed, bowled by part-time off-spinner Asif, after having hit 22 fours and a brace of sixes during his 182-ball effort lasting 270 minutes.

Muzammil Nizam, who added 60 with Faizan for the sixth wicket, further tormented the SSGC bowling while making 31 in the unbroken partnership of 47 with Azam Khan. Azam used the long handle to score 32 and Muzammil made 31.

SSGC negotiated 1.3 overs to close at 19-0 in their reply.
