RAWALPINDI: A lab assistant at Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) has been suspended allegedly for corruption.

A senior officer at BBH, on condition of anonymity, told Dawn that Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Asif Qadir Mir paid a surprise visit to the pathology department and checked the record of a lab assistant.

During the inspection, it was revealed that the assistant had received fees from at least three patients for various tests, and had not kept any record of it.

Speaking to Dawn, Dr Qadir Mir confirmed that he had suspended the lab assistant for not maintaining the record and ordered an inquiry against him.

“At the moment, we can’t say whether this turns out to be a big corruption scam. However, inquiry is underway,” he said.

On the other hand, some employees of BBH alleged that the suspended assistant, in connivance with some senior officers, used to embezzle thousands of rupees daily.
