KARACHI, Sept 16: Four people, including a policeman and a political activist, were gunned down in the city on Monday, police said.

Three of the four killings took place within the jurisdiction of the Mominabad and Pakistan Bazaar police stations of densely populated Orangi Town.

The police said that Constable Mushtaq Nazar, 35, was purchasing fish near the Mominabad police station when two gunmen riding a motorcycle emerged there, fired shots at him and rode away.

He was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The victim originally hailed from Gujrat.

The police said that one of the assailants was wearing a helmet.

Mominabad SHO Ahmed Butt said that the victim had gone to court to testify as a prosecution witness in a 2012 robbery case, but the hearing could not take place.

“We are investigating whether his killing was related to the court case,” said DIG-West Javed Akhtar Odho.

Ex-MQM councillor shot dead

A young activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was gunned down in Orangi Town within the jurisdiction of the Mominabad police station.

Police said that Mohammed Iqbal, 30, was on his way to his office when armed men targeted him.

He sustained a single bullet wound in the head. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The victim was a former councillor and a worker of the unit-126 of the MQM’s organisational structure, said the area SHO.

“Apparently, Iqbal fell victim to targeted killing,” said the DIG-West.

He was an employee of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.

Former SI killed, son wounded in attack

A former police officer was shot dead and his son wounded critically in Orangi Town within the jurisdiction of the Pakistan Bazaar police station.

Police said that retired sub-inspector Mohammed Bux Jatoi, 62, and his son, Kashif, 20, were riding on a motorcycle when assailants, also riding a motorbike, opened indiscriminate fire on them near Bangla Bazaar and fled. The wounded were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors declared the former policeman dead.

His son also sustained five bullet wounds in the chest, head and arm and was shifted to the intensive care unit of the hospital, said additional police surgeon Dr Abdul Haq.

The DIG-West Odho said that the likely motive for the killing was some personal enmity.

The victim originally hailed from Naushahro Feroze.

Man found shot dead in Surjani

The bullet-riddled body of a man was found in Surjani Town on Monday, according to police.

They said the body was found in the bushes near the Northern Bypass.

Only a paper chit inscribed with a name, Asif, was found in his pocket.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and later moved to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

Doctors said the body was brought to the health facility at 10.30am, and he had been killed around eight hours earlier.
