KARACHI, Sept 4: While Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his cabinet discussed ways to restore peace to the country’s commercial capital on Wednesday, Karachi continued to witness killings on political and sectarian grounds as 12 more people fell prey to targeted attacks.

A Pakistan Navy official, three political activists and two policemen were among those killed. Besides, a Rangers man and three suspected criminals were killed in an encounter with police in Lyari’s Baghdadi area.

Captain Nadeem Ahmed, 40, of the PN was shot dead near the National Stadium, while his wife, Tracy, was wounded in an armed attack.

Orangi Town has become the most-troubled area of the city where six killings took place within the jurisdiction of different police stations only on Wednesday.

Police said that three workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement were killed in separate incidents in Orangi Town, Napier Road area and Mehmoodabad.

In Orangi Town, Sheikh Baber aka Shakeel Mota, 40, was targeted outside his residence near Islam Chowk in Sector-11½. The victim was a city warden and worker of unit-119 of the MQM’s organisational structure, said Iqbal Market SHO Amjad Kiani.

In Mehmoodabad, Ayaz Qadri, 28, was gunned down near Abdullah paan shop in Chanesar Goth.

The victim was earlier a worker with a religious party, but had recently joined the MQM.

His brother, Faisal, was killed around a month back allegedly by some drug peddlers in the same locality.

The body of another worker of the MQM was found in the Napier area.

The police said that the bullet-riddled body, stuffed in a gunny bag, was found near Old Haji Camp. It bore torture marks.

The victim identified as Mohammed Asif, a resident of Usmanabad-16, was a worker of the MQM, the police said.

Man, son shot dead

A man and his young son were gunned down in Orangi Town on Wednesday, according to the Pakistan Bazaar police.

They said that Khurshid Malik, 60, and his son, Khayal Malik, 22, were going somewhere on a motorcycle when gunmen, also riding a motorcycle, attacked them near Ghousia Chowk in Gulshan-i-Bihar.

They suffered multiple bullet wounds and were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead. The police said the elder Malik was a cousin of Assistant Sub-Inspector Shamshad Malik, who was killed on Tuesday.

SI, constable gunned down

A policeman was gunned down in Orangi Town on Wednesday evening.

The Mominabad police said that Sub-Inspector Arif Akram was passing through Orangi’s Sector-4-F on his motorcycle when assailants targeted him.

Area SHO Ahmed Butt said that the victim was posted at the Governor House security wing and was returning home when he was targeted. He was in uniform.

Meanwhile, a police constable was gunned down in Orangi Town.

Haji Javed, 45, was riding his motorcycle to the Mauripur police station for duty when two armed riders targeted him near the Shaheen school in Sector-11½ and rode away.

Ahmadi man killed

An Ahmadi man was shot dead in Orangi Town.

The Mominabad police said that Ejaz Ahmed, 36, was riding a motorcycle when he was targeted by armed riders near a roadside eatery in Khyber-Pakhtun Colony in Sector-4-F. He sustained a single bullet in the head and was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The police said the victim was a factory worker.

A spokesperson for the Jamaat-i-Ahmadiyya said that the victim was their worker.

He said Ejaz’s brother-in-law Nawaz, a police constable, was also gunned down in Orangi Town last year for similar reasons.

Ex-policeman shot dead in Pak Colony

A former policeman was found shot dead in Pak Colony.

Police said that the body of Malik Waqas was found in Mianwali Colony near Jehanabad Chowk. He was shot in the head.

The victim was a close friend of an MQM worker, Mohammed Asif, said Pak Colony SHO Bilal Raza.

He said that both of them were kidnapped on Tuesday and their bodies were found in separate areas.

He said Waqas was dismissed from services by then DIG-South Shahid Hayat on a charge of his alleged involvement in criminal activities.

Killing in Shah Faisal Colony

A young man was shot dead in Shah Faisal Colony, police said on Wednesday.

They said Imran Suleman, 26, was sitting outside his house in Shah Faisal Colony-3 late on Tuesday night when two gunmen fired at him.

The motive for the killing could not be ascertained.

Youth shot dead in Kalri

A young man was gunned down in Kalri on Wednesday evening, police said.

They said Mohammed Ali, 20, aka Babu was standing near a vendor shop on Karabhai Karimjee Road in Nayyabad when gunmen fired at him and fled. He died on the spot.

The motive for the killing could not be ascertained immediately.

Rangers man, two suspects killed in shootout

A shootout between Rangers and suspected criminals in Lyari on Wednesday left three suspects and a Rangers man dead.

Officials said that a Rangers team had conducted a targeted operation in the Baghdadi area on a tip-off about the presence of alleged gangster Abdul Jabbar aka Jingu.

Baghdadi SHO Munir Chandio said that the Rangers team came under an armed attack and one of their men, identified as Sohail Akhtar, was killed.

The Rangers also returned fire killing two suspects, Mulla Saleem and Amanullah aka Sana. During the crossfire, Constable Aziz Baloch, a resident of the same area, also suffered bullet wounds and died.

The area SHO said that the policeman was posted in the court police and lived in the Baghdadi area.

He said the constable’s family alleged that he was taken away by the Rangers who later killed him.

SP-Lyari Javed Iqbal Bhatti told Dawn that the police were verifying the facts of the case.
