IT has been reported that the famed paceman Wasim Akram has married his Australian girlfriend Shaniera Thompson, and that he has started a new life on a happy note (Aug 22).

In these dismal times when we mostly get to see stories and pictures of the many Pakistani victims of terrorism almost on a daily basis, it was a most refreshing change to see the smiling faces of the couple. To top it off, Wasim has also stated that she has been close to his sons (from his previous marriage) and they form a very good bond. Theirs appears to be truly a match made in Heaven!

His fiancée had reportedly already converted to Islam and had decided to call Pakistan home (July 8). Given the bad press Islam and Pakistan have unfortunately been getting for some years, it is very courageous of Ms Thompson to take these steps. Nevertheless, it is a fact that numerous people worldwide continue accepting Islam. Also, many foreigners from the East and the West, including some of our past cricketing coaches, who have spent time over here, have praised the warmth, generosity, friendiness and hospitality of the Pakistanis.

So, one is confident these are correct decisions by her. Love is such a wonderful thing, and, as they say, love conquers all. It is, “above all, the gift of oneself and a looking outward together, in the same direction”.

One wishes the couple a very long, happy, healthy and fulfilling life together. It has been said: “There is no more lovely, friendly, and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage.” Heartiest congratulations, Wasim and Shaniera!
