KARACHI: Pakistan cricket authorities Thursday decided to meet former captain Rashid Latif who is backing leg-spinner Danish Kaneria in his fight against a lifetime ban for spot-fixing.

The 31-year-old spinner was last year banned by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for luring his Essex county team-mate Marvyn Westfield to concede an agreed number of runs during an over in a county match in 2009.

Kaneria's two appeals against the ban were both rejected earlier this year. He, however, has launched a fresh appeal in a London commercial court.

Latif last week said Pakistan cricket authorities should not force Kaneria to plead guilty to spot-fixing until he has exhausted all legal options available to him. He also offered to share some evidence with them which could help in the leg-spinner's case.

“The PCB has decided to meet Latif soon and talk on the (Kaneria) case,” a board spokesman told AFP.

PCB legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi is likely to meet Latif.

Latif, famous for his fight against corruption in cricket, last week said he was backing Kaneria after some serious thought and reading all the relevant documents in the case.

Kaneria is one of four Pakistan players serving bans in fixing. Former captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer are also serving bans in a separate 2010 case.
