KINGSTOWN: Thirty-four-year debutant Zulfiqar Babar took three key wickets then struck a six off the final ball of the match to give Pakistan a two-wicket victory over West Indies in the first Twenty20 international on Saturday.

Babar dismissed Marlon Samuels (25), Lendl Simmons (6) and Dwayne Bravo (25) to finish with three for 23 from his four overs in West Indies' 152 for seven at Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent.

The visitors lost wickets at regular intervals in their run-chase but were always up with the required rate and, with the scores tied and one ball to go, Babar launched Samuels over the mid-off boundary to seal the win.

Kieron Pollard (49 not out) showed a welcome return to form as he anchored the West Indies innings after they had won the toss and elected to bat.

Pakistan lost early wickets in their reply, but Umar Amin, also playing his first T20 international, smashed 47 in 34 balls before he was stumped off the bowling of Samuels.

Shahid Afridi took Pakistan close, scoring 46 from just 27 deliveries, including launching his 400th six in all international cricket.

With Pakistan needing six off the last over, Samuels took his team to the brink of a super over, before bowling a full toss that Babar smashed for six from the final delivery.

“It was a great effort from the players, I was really happy to see the desire to win and really happy with the contributions of the debutants and Shahid Afridi. It was a tough chase, we had to be positive,” Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez said.

The second and final match of the series will be played at the same venue on Sunday.

West Indies: D. Sammy (captain), C. Gayle, J. Charles, M. Samuels, L. Simmons, D.J. Bravo, K. Pollard, D. Sammy, S. Narine, T. Best, S. Gabriel.

That was some sensible batting from Afridi. He can do really well if he start using 10% of his brain while batting.

Win or lose, you can't hide the problems which have been exposed in each and every match. Our top 3 are a no goer. Hafeez has been out of touch for a long periode and he still fails even when he is presented the only pitches he normally scores at. Opners are a constant problem too. Our death bowlers are disappointing and have been so in most of the matches. I wonder if Mohammad Akram has a plan or a tip or two for our death bowlers. Hope to see Haris Sohail replacing Hammad Azzam whose inclusion is unexplainable. He is a mediocre bowler who gets beateing even in domestic matches and his batting has nothing to write about as his average in domestic cricket is much below par.

Lets open with Asad Shafiq, replace Hammad with Haris Sohail and Sohail Tanveer with Junaid.

There is more sensible batting coming from Shahid Afridi of late which is heartening to note.Hammad Azam needs to improve with his batting standard.Just 10 runs and could not even anchor or hit the ball out is just not good enough. Not sure of playing too many bowlers in team when Harish Sohail could be additional batsman for the team.Opening batsman need to be showing more consistency.Overall Afridi performance level has improved a lot after 80 plus score in South Africa ODI and followed by 74 here in first ODI and then holding nerves in final ODI to get Pakistan over the line.Overall it has been good performance from Afridi.Any way Congratulations Pakistan and now it cannot lose T20 series too.

Afridi is the best allrounder in cricketing world and has got his own style and a lion heart man who can bouldoze any baller in the world and he is the man whom 90% cricket lovers love to watch playing 40balls and we love to see him playing 95balls in an one and want to see how much he score I guess not less than 170runs and not letss than 14 sixes thats the man of steel and heart of lion BOOM BOOM....

Hafeez should complete his stint of overs if he is bowling well, once he is off, he never comes back, also for second game, he sholud drop one fast bowler and bring in a specialist bastmen.

Afridi BOOM BOOM is the only player who plays with full heart not for captaincy unlike MISBHA and Hafeez who started playing good being as captain and under AFRIDI's captaincy they hardly scored any runs and won any matches,,,,there shud be a full proof investigation on the performance of MISBHA and HAFEEZ being as captain and also being a team player under AFRIDI's captaincy......

Why not mentioning Umar Amin's knock in the headline..? That was an equally crucial contribution, if not more. If Misbah had come in Amir's place Pak would have lost the match. Great game..

I watched this match. Zulfiqar lived up to the reputation of a feisty Pakistani. Winning a match by hitting a six off the last ball is something Pakistani players seem to relish :-) Good job!

It is high times that we should give chances to the new faces, instead of relying on old guards. zulfiqar babar came from nowhere and perform outstand cricket. well done Pakistan team

@Parvez: Why was he chosen Man of the Match then ;)? I believe score board showed he scored 46 runs in 23 balls ;).

Giving up playing defensive cricket will produce more victories for Pakistan. In second last over, Afridi dominated on bowler....

I admire Afridi. He is a highly talented player and can blossom as one the best all rounders in the cricketing world. But his playing attitude often derails him, rendering him unable to maintain consistency at the higher level.

Man of the match award should have gone to either Amin or Baber and not to Afridi. But the world is never fair.
