GROS ISLET: Pakistan wicketkeeper Umar Akmal missed a run-out opportunity and the West Indies last-wicket pair of Kemar Roach and Jason Holder scrambled two runs off the final ball to tie the third one-day international Friday.

Responding to the tourists' total of 229 for six, and requiring 15 off the final over to win, Holder smashed a four and a six over cover off medium-pacer Wahab Riaz to keep the home side's unlikely prospects alive, resulting in the last ball drama that leaves the series level at 1-1 going into the fourth match at the same venue on Sunday.

West Indies middle-order batsman Lendl Simmons and Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, the joint top-scorers with 75 runs each in the thrilling encounter, also shared the Man of the Match award.

However, Misbah found it difficult to accept how his team could not have won the match after reducing the Caribbean side to 205 for nine in the 49th over.

“It's really, really disappointing, but I have to say the way Holder played at the end he took the game away from us,” said an incredulous Misbah.

“In that last over there were too many full deliveries to the tailenders, but hats off to them, they played well.”

In his usual calm, unruffled manner, Misbah had compiled his runs to steady the Pakistan innings after the early loss of both openers while Akmal swatted an unbeaten 40 off 31 deliveries, dominating an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 52 off 26 balls with Wahab (19 not out) to give the tourists a fighting chance on a pitch offering considerably more pace and bounce than for the first two ODIs in Guyana.

Holder and Dwayne Bravo took two wickets apiece but skipper Bravo's decision to persist with himself in the final overs proved costly, his last three overs being plastered for 40 runs.

It was a bewildering decision given that Marlon Samuels had bowled only three overs in conceding just four runs and was not utilised at the end.

“This was a match we should have won after the bowlers had done such a good job,” a disappointed Bravo insisted.

“Once again the batting let us down. It should never have gotten down to the bowlers having to save us.”

Pakistan's left-arm seamers made early inroads into the West Indies batting line-up and it took Simmons' effort together with a painstaking 46 from Samuels go keep the home side within reach of the target.

However, with spinner Saeed Ajmal taking three wickets in the space of two overs and Junaid Khan joining in with two scalps himself, the West Indies looked to have frittered away their opportunity in losing five wickets for 27 runs.

Big-hitting from Sunil Narine during a very brief cameo revived flagging hopes and then it came down to that decisive final over as the senior members of the Pakistan squad deliberated with their captain over who should bowl the final over.

Choosing Wahab was always going to be a gamble, as he had already conceded the most expensive over of the innings when belted for 15 runs during the batting powerplay.

Maintaining a full length gave Holder the opportunity to smash the telling boundaries after a couple of singles, leaving three runs for victory and two to tie off the final ball.

A sliced drive to third-man guaranteed at least one but he should have been run out by at least half the length of the pitch in coming back for the second tying run, only for Akmal to fail to collect the return.

West Indies: Chris Gayle, Johnson Charles (wk), Darren Bravo, Lendl Simmons, Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Bravo (capt), Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy, Kemar Roach, Sunil Narine, Jason Holder

Pakistan: Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Hafeez, Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Haris Sohail, Umar Akmal (wk), Shahid Afridi, Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Irfan

What a shame. Our tail enders scored more then our top 3 specialist batsmen. Shahid Afridi is a one trick pony. He has done his trick - and everyone knows that trick. Time to drop him now. Plus the Professor has now become a "Khalifa". Maybe time to overhaul now.

I wrote that no matter what Misbah will stick with Hafeez and Wahab Riaz and they will drop Asad Shafiq and Asad Ali. It is very clear that Misbah doesn't like Afridin that is why he gave him only four overs after his 7 for 16 in the first ODI and 2 wickets in the 2nd ODI. Misbah is a good batsman but a poor captain. Pkaistan needs to bring in Younus Khan as captain for all type of matches and get rid of Hafeez and Wahab Riaz. Misbah can still play as a batsman. Time also to get rid of the coach.

West Indies tail enders (9,10, &11) played much better than Pakistan's top order(1, 2, & 3). Ahmad Shazad strike rate was 38,scored only 17 and Mohammad Hafeez(prof) scored paltry 14 at 42 SR. Terrible, terrible performance. Misbah should be droped from the team for not saving the last over for Irfan or Junaid. Bad calculation on his part and unfortunately not the first or last time. Too defensive approach of Misbah is taking the toll on the youngsters.

Why can't they send Umar Akmal at # 3, after so many cries, and he also want to make an impact up the order. Bring Hafeez down (no technique, what so ever) Umar Akmal lost the sight of the last ball as though it was pre-decided to tie the game. Overacting by Dav whatmore in the dressing room.

When Misbah will learn from his mistakes. Did not he know the runs average of bowlers or was he sleeping. He should have given the final over to Hafeez or second choice to Afridi. Pakistan lost second match because of his wrong decision to field first, and now because of his wrong choice of a bowler for the last over.

The short run given by the Umpire to Akmal/wahab is the difference. Umpiring error cost Pakistan the match. ICC should come out with some solution.

Batting order needs to be revised. Umar Akmal needs to bat up the order and Afridi needs to be rested so he can one more 'miraculous' comeback.

Dear,

Increasingly Misbah is looking helpless like a captain of a sinking titanic. Nothing has gone his way in last 6 months.

Pakistan should claim one run because of umpire given one run short of Umar Akmal but he completed the run.

July 20, 2013 10:29 am

Get rid of Hafeez, play Akmal as a batsman and bring in a good wicket-keeper. Akmal is not really a good keeper, can't stop the flow of runs from edges/pads, wides, etc. Plus that last ball throw should have been taken with a clean run out. He is not a good keeper by any means.

Wahab Riaz is a suspect bowler. He is the one giving runs left and right. How come he is being selected when he turns a win into a loss again and again. Get rid of this guy.

Westindies must b thankful to Misbha as a Captain who is occuping crease till 45 overs and playing 128 balls scoring 75runs if he wud played the game as one day mode he wud have scored 100+ that wud have been difference too much defensive and tuk tuk not fit for even test mode....even a galli cricketer wasting 40+balls can hit continous sixes but Misbha will never settled and he is not a dependent or match winner captain....

how could umar miss to collect the ball on last ball of the last over. it felt like fixed. :). he is a great player - batsman and keeper. he just seemed to have acted well that the ball was out of reach. it wasnt, not for a keeper like him. in last over it felt like match was given away - bad fielding, no fielders, bad bowling. it was sad to see the coach.

Shahid Afridi has maintained his consistency in performing once and then failing for the next 10 games. The selectors and his fans appear to be oblivious of this fact which is self-defeating.

Sitarist culture wins again. Wahhabi Riaz who has never ever performed even in one match in his entire career is always in team. He was involved in Salman Butt corruption case also but was protected by his political affiliation. Chief selector Iqbal Qasim should be held accountable for keeping Wahab Riaz in team on sifarish, Wahab Riaz political relative should be held accountable for bringing Pakistan to disrepute

The real problem starts from the top... that's Misbah. I don't know whose back he has otherwise he must have been sacked a long time ago. He has defeatist mindset. He is not Miandad who can score on right occasions to lead team to victory. Misbah can score albeit on such rate that it is good for his own statistics but not useful to the team.

Likewise as a captain, he cannot make right decision at right times when on the field. For instance, Wahab Riaz is another 'sifarishi' and has given runs before as late as the last match. Still, Misbah keeps on sticking with him. It seems Misbah does not inspire team and make them believe on themselves.

Pakistan is going through some of the worst days since its creation. With hockey on its lowest, Cricket is only source of entertainment available and, alas, individuals like Misbah are ruining it. If he had any morality he would have gone by now. But, he didn't till he commits a bigger blunder and then he'll be let go by officials on the top to save their own skin.

Blame also goes to the selectors... some of them are holding on to their position for years if not decades. But, that's they way it works in PCB. The downfall started with Ejaz Butt who single handedly destroyed cricket in Pakistan.

It seems that Pakistan Cricket Team has a curse on them. The problem is the captain. He consumes most of the overs in TCK, TUCK. He scores runs and gets out after the game is lost. He scored 75 runs in 112 balls and wasted chances of other batsmen by standing on crease with Tuck, Tuck. He even advises others, especially newcomers to save wickt and play slowly. No one is playing their natural game. This puts lot of pressure on players like Umar and Afridi, who enter the game with little score of board. The result is these players have to score on every ball and thus get out . This is what happens to Afridi. The captain should be given permanent rest from the game. It is because of his style of play that team hardly scores over 200. The same team was scoring 250 or more when AFRIDI and other captains were there. Misbah is reason of defeats and low scoring. Please face the facts and do not criticise other players for the sake of dislike.

@Mike: Agree, In ODI Umar Akmal has to come up in the order. He is the most talented bat we have. He has to improvise and get 1s and 2s more often. Muhammad Rizwan should be given a chance as wicket keeper. Either Hafeez or Wahab should be selected for 5 down position. If Misbah can play at the age of 40 why can't we bring back Adul Razaak also. He is a match winner batsman who can play on front foot and back foot.

If you have seen the full WI innings you must have heard Umar Akmal yelling to the outer fielders "wicket pe Mara" throw one bounce on the wicket! Cheating is in these brothers blood! If you donor have honest intentions you got what Pakistan got as a result! His this cruel intentions that too in the month of Ramadan were disturbing. God is the best leveler, Umar and Wahab were the guys instrumental in bringing Pak to a winning total and ironically they also were culprits to devoid Pak a certain win. Play with honesty in your hearts guys!

This cricket and anything can happen till the last ball is bowled. I think it was not about the last over but the over all pakistani batting. Do you guys really need all those bowlers including hafeez and afridi. One between hafeez and afridi should be replaced by a specialist batsman.

@Khalid: If he starts batting at Number 6 then problem for Pakistan will be down 5 wickets for 0 runs and so there will be lesser batsman to support him from other end.Forget about attacking batting of other batsman they are struggling to save their wickets and some just give batting practice to fielders.Good thing for Pakistan is Harish Sohail looks excellent prospect for Pakistan and Umar Akmal back with his good batting form,I believe Pakistan can look to include Umar Amin or another batsman in top of order.Hafeez cannot be counted as batsman unfortunately.

Yet again a 'POOR' show of captaincy by Misbah Ul Haq!! I hope & pray that this is his last series as ODI captain!! Afridi deserves the captaincy & he should get it! You people out there will select 'Thumbs Down' on my comment but stop; think about it...Afridi is the man who can perform in this role FAR, FAR better than any player in the team! Lets not forget people: Umar Akmal & Afridi come to bat when there are hardly 10 overs left in the innings and they scramble for runs try to put decent score... If they do then they are considered heros and if they don't then they are dropped... Imagine this ordeal.... Drop Hafeez, Nasir, Asad from the team; when was last time they performed...
