KARACHI: Pakistan's cricket bosses on Monday appointed former captain Moin Khan as chief selector, a post he said he took on as a challenge.

The 41-year-old takes over from Iqbal Qasim, who stepped aside earlier this month in a move seen as a reaction to the team's miserable performance in the Champions Trophy in England.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Khan held discussion with interim chairman Najam Sethi and accepted the role.

“Former captain and wicket-keeper Khan will take over as chief selector while the rest of the members of the committee will remain the same,” a PCB release said.

Former left-arm paceman Salim Jaffer, Test batsman Azhar Khan, Farrukh Zaman and Asif Baloch are the other selectors.

Moin Khan said he accepted the role as a challenge.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be offered the position of chairman of national selection committee -- a position held by many greats in the past and most recently by legendary spinner Qasim,” he was quoted as saying in the release.

Khan played 69 Tests and 219 one-day internationals for Pakistan in 1990s and was also a member of World Cup winning team in 1992.

“I have accepted this as a challenge and I am glad that PCB and my own vision corresponds in terms of preparing a pool of talented cricketers who can mount an effective challenge in the 2015 World Cup.”

No tenure has been announced for Khan's post under an interim PCB set-up which took over after chairman Zaka Ashraf was suspended due to complaints about his election in May this year.

Last week the Islamabad high court ordered Sethi to hold elections for the PCB chairman within 90 days.

It is a good decision but the selection should be on merit.young players should be given chance for up coming series of Zimbabwe as India had sent new players to Zimbabwe tour

PCB just never learns does it. What is the guarantee that an ex cricketer makes a perfect Selection Chief ? Australia, Sth Africa, England, India all successful teams employ specialists for this role whereas "only" in pakistan it has to be an ex cricketer. A guy who could not even successfully be a captain for the team be a chief selector ? let alone his past involvement in sourcing players for Indian leagues opens the door for bias selection.

He has spoken against the selection and the team set up in the past. I am curious to see what changes he plans to implement. He was known as a fighter during his playing days. I really hope he will select players with the same mentality.

It looks to me a good decision. Lets see how he delivers!!! He should deliver without any pressure from any other sources. Merit should only be the criteria for the team selection which has been missing since long time.

Dear Moin Khan, I have been reading your articles and comments in DAWN. You have a very balanced and rational approach. Please apply this approach to your new job. I hope you are able to handle the political pressures attached to this job. This could be a ploy to silence your criticism by handing you the job you have been so critical about in the past. The batting has failed miserably on repeated occasions now. The bowlers do not have enough runs to play with. The spirit of 1992 has to return and who knows about that better than you. I wish you well in your new but tough assignment.

We trust Moin Khan, hope and pray that he is able to do justice with the task. Sincerity with game will do the trick.

Why are the other selectors approximately same people. Saleem Jaffar was also a selector under Iqbal Qasim and other chief selectors. This changing of top face is not going to improve the quality of selection unless we do a complete overhaul of the system. I dont see any changes in the Pakistan cricket if we still have the same old failed selectors under new chief selectors. This policy of trying the same old tested failures is not going to succeed by changing the top person only. Please bring in people who have played more tests under the chief selector. Only then we will get a better system.

Moin Khan, please change the captain of the team at least. Please keep Misbah as a batsman but replace him as a captain. Please look into making Younis Khan as a captain of ODI and Test teams as he is Sr. and has proven himself by winning us T20 WC while taking us to the semi final of Champions Trophy in S. Africa. Younis should be given the team till next WC and a vice captain should be groomed under him. Younis was groomed by Woolmer and was identified as a captain by Pybus. So please look into it, Please dont make the same experiment of making a Jr. captain as such experiments always fail in Pakistan.

I only hope you will read these comments or somebody will make you aware of these comments.

Moin doesn't look to be a smart choice for such an important position. He was guilty of politicking in his playing days and always remained in the team whenever Wasim Akram was captain. Otherwise Rashid Latif used to be our keeper. A very bad decision by Sethi, which is not a surprise.

Good choice. Selectors need to be smart and have a very good sense of Pakistan and international cricket.

As Indian Cricket Fan, I can say PCB picked the wrong "Khan". It should have been Imran. He is the only one who can resurrect the Dead Pak Cricket by bringing in the same old winning mentality and aggression.

As simple as I can put it
