KARACHI, July 1: Three workers of the Sunni Tehreek and an activist of the Jamaat-i-Islami were gunned down in separate incidents on Monday, police and party sources said.

They said Mohammad Farooq, 35, a factory worker, was on his way to work in Baldia-3 when gunmen riding a motorcycle shot at and wounded him. He was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

In the second incident in New Karachi, ST worker Junaid Sultan, 25, was shot dead, New Karachi Industrial Area (NKIA) police said.

They said as he left his home in Sector 5-F for some work, armed motorcyclists opened fire on him and fled. He sustained a single bullet in the head, which proved fatal.

The third ST worker was gunned down in New Karachi, the NKIA police said.

They said Mohammad Aslam aka Dunba, 35, was passing by the Aqsa mosque in Sector 11-F when armed motorcyclists opened fire on him and fled.

He sustained a single bullet in the head and was taken to the CHK, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Tension and fear gripped the locality after the killing.

An ST spokesperson said he was the third party worker killed in the same area as Asif Qadri was gunned down within the remit of the NKIA police on Sunday night. He said 17 St workers had been killed during the last one-and-a-half months in the metropolis.

JI man killed

A Jamaat-i-Islami activist was shot dead in Malir on Monday.

As 55-year-old Muhammad Aslam Siddiqi emerged from a mosque after offering Maghrib prayers in Gulzar-i-Ibrahim Society, gunmen opened fire on him and fled, said Alfalah SHO Inayatullah Narejo. The victim sustained three bullets wounds on different parts of his body and died before any medical aid could be provided to him.

“Mr Siddiqi was not only a JI worker but he was also an employee of Pakistan Steel Mills,” said the JI spokesperson.

The victim’s body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities.

Two killed in Lyari

Two young men were shot dead in separate incidents in Lyari. Police said the bullet-riddled body of a young man was found in a garbage dump in Hingorabad, Kalri. The body was shifted to the CHK, where the victim could not be immediately identified.

In an incident in Baghdadi, Zubair Aurangzeb, 25, was shot dead. He was passing through the Juna mosque area in his rickshaw when a bullet fired from an unknown direction hit him in the head, said Baghdadi SHO Abid Tanoli. The victim died on the spot. He was a rickshaw driver originally hailing from Hazara in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Suspected robber killed in Defence

A suspected robber was shot dead in Defence Housing Authority Phase-II by a citizen late Sunday night, the Defence police said.

They said as Ayaz Memon was parking his car near his residence when the suspect, identified as Muhammad Gulab, 35, tried to loot him.

However, Mr Memon took out his pistol and pumped two bullets into the suspect, who died on the spot while his accomplice escaped on a motorcycle. A pistol was found on his body.

“An identity card found in Gulab’s possession showed that he was a driver posted in the Sindh home department,” said investigation officer Khalid.

Two ‘robbers’ killed

Two suspected robbers were shot dead in separate incidents allegedly by their accomplices.

The Sohrab Goth police said the bullet-riddled body of Mohammad Javed, 18, was found in a graveyard near Indus Plaza.

The dead originally hailed from Mohmand Agency and was a resident of Hasan Noman Colony near the place of the killing. The police said he was involved in criminal activities and might have been murdered by his accomplices over some issue.

In another incident, the bullet-riddled body of Imran Khan aka Kawwa, 25, was found in the Kati Pahari area.

The Shahrah-i-Noorjehan police said the dead, originally hailing from Swat, was a resident of Qasba Colony.

They said he had told his brother on Sunday night that he might not come home in the night, and in the morning his body was found on a hillock. “Imran was allegedly involved in criminal activities and might have been killed by his accomplices,” SHO Ghulam Nabi Afridi said.

Stray bullet kills man

An elderly man was killed by s stray bullet in Baghdadi, said the police.

A bullet fired from an unknown direction hit 65-year-old Qamar Zaman in the head as he came out of his house near Juna mosque on Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road, they said.

The victim, a tailor by profession, was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi where he died during treatment. The victim hailed from Hazara.

“Mr Zaman fell victim to firing into the air being carried out by two rival groups in the area,” said an official at the Baghdadi police station, Muhammad Khan.

Man killed, brother injured

A man was shot dead while his brother was wounded in Landhi on Monday night, according to the Sukhan police.

They said 40-year-old Shahid Hanif and his brother Mujahid, aka Sona, were returning from Shershah after purchasing some material for their house in Labour Square when armed motorcyclists opened fire on them and fled.

The wounded were taken to the JPMC where doctors pronounced Mr Hanif dead.

“The incident could not be the result of a robbery bid since the suspects did not take away money or scrap material from the vehicle,” said Malir SSP Mazhar Nawaz Sheikh. He said that the victims had been involved in junk-dealing business in the Shershah market and originally hailed from Sialkot. “The murder may be the outcome of a business rivalry, extortion or personal enmity,” opined the senior officer.
