IN the wake of continuing unrest among doctors as regards security issues, there is much to ponder over as to what makes the perpetrators of such heinous crimes so bold that they enter hospitals, make the staff hostage and even resort to killings of doctors and nurses.

The doctors’ only crime is that they treat the ailing community without any prejudice of caste and creed while a group of terrorists are opposed to this. These terrorists want members of a certain sect to be excluded from receiving such benefit. Hence murderous attacks on members of this community.

Doctors are healers of humanity and not of a single sect or caste.

The recent killings of the medical staff at the Bolan Medical Complex speak volumes of the inept security measures taken there. No less than a month ago four house officers were abducted at the same place.

Who is responsible? It is time the government looked into the problem with due concern, regardless of it being a local or provincial one. All hospitals should be provided with extra tight security, CCTV cameras and walk-through gates. Today they have targeted the healers of the community; tomorrow they might be heading for the inhabitants of Margalla Hills.
