Three of family shot dead

KOHAT, July 1: A tribesman committed suicide after killing his wife, daughter and son and injuring two other children in Garhi Mawaz Khan area in Kohat city on Saturday.

According to the city police, Wali Khan of Kurram Agency shot dead his wife, Noorzadi Begum, daughter Safeena and son Kadim over a family dispute, and injured two other children, Sadaf and Waleed. Later he shot himself dead. The injured were shifted to KDA divisional headquarters hospital.

An official said Wali Khan was living in a rented house in Garhi Nawaz. “Police after filing a case against the accused started making efforts to arrest him,” said the official at the city police station.—Correspondent

2 more children die of measles

NOWSHERA, July 1: Two more children died of measles in Nowshera district on Monday.

The victims were named as Atuba (six months old) and Romi (two years old) of Azakhel Payan. They died at Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar.

Relevant officials said the girls were admitted to Rashid Shaheed Memorial Hospital, Pabbi, over two weeks back. However, later they were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar due to severe fever.

Health department officials said more than 30 children had so far died of measles in various Nowshera villages. The deputy commissioner has formed anti-measles teams to vaccinate the affected children. Medicines have also been provided to hospitals in Nowshera, said the officials.—Correspondent

Man kills wife

MANSEHRA, July 1: A man shot dead his wife over unknown reasons in Banjna area of Baffa on Monday.

Baffa police said Taj Mohammad shot dead his wife, Gul Taj, after exchanging harsh words with her over some issue.

The police took the body to civil hospital in Baffa and handed it over to relatives after autopsy.

Police registered a case against the accused on the complaint of Mian Mohammad Khan, brother of the victim. He told police that the accused used to beat his wife without any reason. Efforts were launched to arrest the accused, said an official.—Correspondent

Police inaction decried

MARDAN, July 1: Residents of Tambulak area here have demanded of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led provincial government and chief justice of Pakistan to provide them with justice in the killing of their relatives by a speeding police van on June 21.

Speaking at press conference here on Friday, Zawar Khan, Mohammad Saleem and Saif-u-Rehman said their relatives, Uzair, and his niece, Attiqa (6) riding a motorcycle, were hit by police van on Mardan-Nowshera road leaving them critically injured. According to them, Uzair and Atiqa were taken to Mardan Medical Complex where due to unavailability of doctors they succumbed to their injuries.

The victims’ relatives said they had registered a case against the accused in the city police station, but police were reluctant to arrest the accused.—Correspondent

Two officers reshuffled

PESHAWAR, July 1: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local government, elections and rural development department on Monday reshuffled two officers.

According to a notification issued here, Attaul Haq, deputy secretary (administration), local council board (LCB), was transferred and posted as deputy secretary, local governance school, Peshawar. Mr Haq was also relieved of the additional charge of secretary LCB.

Similarly, Azmatullah Wazir, deputy secretary, local governance school, Peshawar, was transferred and posted as deputy secretary (administration), LCB.

Attaur Rehman, additional secretary, local government, elections and rural development department, will hold additional charge of the post of secretary LCB till further orders, according to the notification.—Correspondent

Youngster electrocuted

SWABI, July 1: A youngster was electrocuted and two others were injured while fishing in River Indus using an electricity generator on Monday. The incident occurred in Gala area.

The practice of fishing with electricity generator is common in the Tarbela downstream, especially in summer when the dam authorities release sufficient amount of water.

They were taken to Civil Hospital Topi where Zar Shad died. Other injured were named Zuber Khan and Mullah Khan. They hailed from Malakand division and were currently living in Topi city.—Correspondent

Tribesmen resent discrimination

KHAR, July 1: Elders of various tribes in Bajaur on Monday resented non-inclusion of their names in the list of a tribal delegation which is to meet President Asif Ali Zardari in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Elders from Barang, Arang, Aseel Targhaoo, Chamarkand and Salarzai told reporters that the local coordinator of Shaheed Bhutto Foundation and local administration officials had assured them that they would be included in the delegation, but their names were dropped.

They said most delegation members were selected from the Tharkani tribe while no elder of Utmankhel tribe, the second largest tribe of the agency, had been included in the delegation. The tribesmen said Utmankhel elders were peace loving, civilised and had always supported the administration for maintaining peace and writ of the government in the area. They called for their inclusion in the delegation.—Correspondent

Workshop for varsity teachers

CHITRAL, July 1: The Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University will help in the progress of Chitral by harnessing the potential of local youth.

This was pointed out by speakers while addressing the opening ceremony of a three-day cascading workshop on ‘ensuring training effectiveness’ held in the Chitral campus of the university for its faculty members.

The speakers said the teacher’s training formed the basis of quality education and made them to respond to the emerging challenges. Chitral assistant commissioner Noorul Amin and director quality enforcement cell of the university Dr Mohammad Kamal also spoke on the occasion.

One window operation

MARDAN, July 1: The local administration on Friday launched one window operation to make easy the process of issuing domicile certificates to people.

Mardan Deputy Commissioner Ghulam Habib Khan told media persons here that they had received several complaints by local residents that they faced difficulties in getting domiciles prepared. He said people had to visit several offices for the purpose. He said revenue officials, including tehsildar, girdawar and patwari had been directed to stay in the offices set up for the purpose in the three tehsils of the district to issue domiciles to residents on the spot.—Correspondent
