LAHORE: Skipper Misbah-ul Haq put a brave face Monday on Pakistan's miserable collapse at the Champions Trophy, believing the team can overcome serious weaknesses to rebuild for the 2015 World Cup.

Pakistan crashed out of the eight-team Champions Trophy last month, losing all three matches as their batsmen flopped once again.

But 39-year-old Misbah, who top-scored in the Trophy with 173, was confident the team can bounce back.

“Losing is not the end, we can rebuild the team in the next two years for the World Cup by working on good players,” Misbah told reporters on his return from England.

Apart from Misbah, all other top order batsmen flopped with opener Mohammad Hafeez scoring 38 runs in three matches, Asad Shafiq 41, Shoaib Malik 25 and Kamran Akmal 23 at the Trophy held in England.

Misbah conceded changes in the team ahead of their five-match, one-day and two Twenty20 international series in the West Indies later this month.

“We have to sit down and discuss, make changes where necessary and plan who are the players to be groomed for the future,” said Misbah, who will retain his position as captain for the one-day series staring in Guyana from July 14.

Misbah denied there was any rift in the team following the poor performances.

“Whenever the team loses such negative things come up but there are no differences because these are the same players who did well recently,” said Misbah.

Pakistan have now lost four of their last five one-day series under Misbah.

Misbah said as captain and as a Pakistan cricketer he was “deeply disappointed” with his team's showing in the Champions Trophy.

“We are playing all our cricket outside Pakistan and that is also one of the reasons we are suffering,” said Misbah of the lack of home series due to the security situation.

Pakistan has been forced to play at neutral venues since militants attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in March 2009, ending all foreign tours to the country.

Misbah said batsmen needed to lift their standards.

“Conditions in England were tough and our batsmen couldn't handle that, but we have to address that problem sooner rather than later,” said Misbah.

Pakistan is expected to appoint former captain Inzamam-ul Haq as batting consultant after their experiment with Australian coach Trent Woodhill in the Trophy failed to produce desired results.

Misbah said he will sit with selectors to finalise a team for the West Indies tour. The team is due to be announced on Wednesday.

As long as Misbah and Hafeez are in the Pakistan Team, they will never win any tournament for Pakistan, be it the world cup or else any other torunament. B'cos they both play politics and dont play for the country.

Four Losses out of Five one day series under Misbah. That's a 20% success rate where as India had a 100% in this tournament. Misbah and his team have performed miserably in comparison to Afrdi and his team. Time to retire them all. The 2015 World Cup team should be of all new kids, They are there just give them a chance. We cannot go any lower than where we are now, so let use the West Indies Tour to induct some new blood and let them get trained on the Job.You might be surprised at the results.

This means that Misbah wants to play World Cup 2015. He will be 41 and his could be the worst build up for the event.

Jul 01, 2013 05:50pm

well selectors should be select shahid khan afridi because he is the main batsman whose our team player fears due to that on the team pressure created therefore afridi must be play and leave the imran farhat and wahab riaz and kamran akmal from the team and add chance to new batsmen.

Idon't believe anything misbah says. If we want to rebuild for the world cup, we should start with kicking this old man out of the team. This guy has lost two world cups for us with his tuk tuk batting, please drop this guy from our team now.

New build means new players. Lets start by getting rid of all these no hopers in our national team shirts.

I would rather see player with heart than these balorinas who won't perform

Jul 01, 2013 06:46pm

rebuild the team? sure ... Misbah we can definitely rebuild the team by you constantly favoring and picking up the same old tried, tested & failed pathetic players such as Hafeez, Malik, Farhat & Akmal. I remember in the recent series against South Africa, Nasir Jamshed faltered once and he was promptly dropped for the next 2 games & yet we remaied stuck with that utter failure Hafeez who despite plyaing for over 9 years now has a miserable 25 bating average to show. And then picking up yet another gem of an opener Farhat for champions trophy. That is how you are going to rebuild the team, correct?

Jul 01, 2013 07:04pm

If team stays the same they can never win, Team need to play more international rather than domestic with international players to build up confidence; they should seriously consider fawad alam and some new kids who have performed in international grounds, and groom new talent. Lastly, they need a Coach who can lift the team spirit rather than teaching them how to hold bat. Because they have seperate coaches for these departments. FIRE DAVE WATMORE and intikhaab alam out !! Save money in that dept, get mohsin khan back from PCB as Coach back, and see the miracle. During his coaching regardless of international experience pakistan has performed better internationally - see the record during his tenure..

Mr. Misbah, You are correct Pakistan has loads of talent and we should be able to build and groom new talent for next WC. As long as you are not their to lead it and we are not letting your buddy system works. As of now, we know that we cannot teach players like Hafeez, Kamran akmal, Imran Farhat (Biggest Parchee of all time), Malik, and yourself to adopt new ways of playing cricket. We need aggressive players who wants to take the game to the last ball and as long as we go down fighting I will be satisfied with it. So do Pakistani fans a favor take your tried and failure buddies with you and vanish. So we can really build a new team with new talent.

Long Live Pakistan

@atif dawood: Well Atif not only he needs to go but also other pachee walaas like Imran Farhat, Karmran Akmal, Hafeez, Malik and please do not bring back Gul either. Also, do not bring back past failures either like Younus, Razzaq. We need to bring fresh blood and new perspective for next WC. Otherwise we will be laughing stock in the world of cricket.

Sorry Misbah you are totally wrong. Instead of building team, he is destroying the team. Its time he must retire for good. Also he wo'nt be fit enough to play in 2015 world cup. His defensive play and captaincy has brought disaster, this is apparent from they way Pakistan performed in Champions Trophy. Pakistan needs to make drastic changes and bring in new players. Even with old players nothing was achieved. Its batting Pakistan really needs to work on along with fielding. Just need to have one coach rather many coaches getting nothing in players mind.

Rebuilding around Misbah..Yeah right... time to retire bro avail this opportunity till there are some dignity cloud upon you.. Kick along a whole bunch as most of you'll know....need some exciting young faces don't care of initial failures they can't be worse than these senior Citizens. Bring in these deserving candidates that are being repeatedly highlighted in recent discussions, like Shoaib Maqsood, Haris Shohail, Umer Akmal, Imad Wasim (all-rounder)/ Hammad Azam/Umar Amin (all-rounders), retain Asad S, Nasir J, Azhar Ali, Hafeez (Only if he performs enough opportunity given), M. Rizwan (WicketKeeper)/U. Akmal Backup, as I always pointed out that we got a fantastic bowling Unit, Plus Amir's return in couple years will be a big bonus...Bring back Mohsin Khan as Coach, Play these young Lads and choose a more aggressive and younger Captain to lead the team ahead... who think we cannot bounce back...yes we can

Yes it is possible to rebuild the team for World Cup but without Misbah, Akmal brothers, Sohaib Malik, and few others. If these players continue to remain in the team it will be very bad news for Cricket fans in Pakistan and around the world. Pakistan will never perform at its best as long as these players are there, for Misbah couple of good innings recently is not enough to justify his selection he has played over 100 One Day matches look at his averages, below par.

Something is really wrong with cricket in Pakistan.Team playing cricket internationally and then scoring just 166 and 174 runs. The problem either lies with selectors, players or a captain.Choosing good players is the duty of selectors, playing good cricket is the duty of players and decision making is the duty of a captain.

If Misbah captains the 2015 World Cup team he will win the Cup for Pakistan. Believe me he has the same determination that of Imran and he takes on the other team on his own as Imran used to do it. He is naturally a hard hitting batsmen who sacrificed his natural game for the team. Without him ak will only score 100 runs in 50 overs.

No rebuild required, we already have a good team IF RIGHT PLAYER FOR RIGHT POSITION IS SELECTED Nasir, Ahmad Shahzad, Umar Akmal, Asad Shafiq/Umer Amin, Misbah, Mohammad Rizwan(wtk), Hafeez, Wahab/HamadAzam, Junaid/Gul, Ajmal, Irfan

Again the same belated excuse... So why was team not rebuilt for champions trophy, all actions or corrective actions are rolled out after future, that shows how short-sighted the management is. Do a complete 8D analysis Identify the problem i.e. batting failures, fieding lapses Root cause of failure Preventive actions Form a new team

AJ
Jul 02, 2013 06:26am

It has been said in last 10 years that we are rebuilding the team but still we have same old jokers who never ever perform. Misbah has been instrumental in getting Shoaib Malik selected even when he never performed. It is high time that Farhat, Shoaib, Kamran and a few others are discarded for ever. Even Jamshid and Asad shafiq should be asked to perform or get sidelined. It is now 40+ innings that Asad has not scored a century and his average is 28. No one should be selected who is not able to maintain an average of above 35. Hafeez is the guy who is the most annoying and we surely know that he won't perform in australia. He should be asked to bat at 6 or get a going too. Bring in Ahmad Shehzad, Haris Sohail, Umar Akmal, Fawad Alam and Abdul Razzaq. Let Umar Akmal keep in WI but take Mohammad Rizwan with you.

They think that people are disappointed because they lost in the Champions Trophy but they are wrong. Take it since England came to Dubai and count all the ODIs since then, be them be against England, Against South Africa or in CT. Only in india they competed but that too because of a single batsman.

Jul 02, 2013 08:07am

@atif dawood: So who else will you bring if this old guy is kicked out? The legendary Hafeez (next captain) is a total flop and your so called young guns are not performing in matches and fitness tests. This old guy led your team to a respectable position after an embarrassing scandal and he is the only one who is the last man standing when others have returned to pavilion. His only fault is that he does not has the energy like that of Afridi and charisma of Imran Khan. What he has is a brain (because he is educated and civilized) and a solid batting technique with understanding of the game in which he has to compete while leading a team full of below average cricketers. Anyways, you guys wont understand this and its not your fault. Peace.

Do you know exactly what you are talking about....I am sure you've got no idea.It is same as what you and other circus men of our cricket team doesn't know anything about cricket, respect of country. I have one question for Misbah. What prevented you from rebuilding for champions trophy. It is time to move on. Misbah should be sacked from captaincy. Selectors also need to be dismissed for their nepotism and favoritism in team selection. No more chances to Imran Farhat, Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal. They have had their chances. New team with young players with energy and motivation to win. Dave Whatmore should be dismissed as well. New set up is needed to build confidence in the team. Use West Indies tour to give exposure to new captain and new players.
