This is apropos the report, “G-8 vows to fight global tax evasion” (June 19). The G-8 summit in Britain ended with a new global solution. The leaders pledged to enforce strict regulation to curb globally three Ts: tax evasion, trade and transparency.
Unfortunately in Pakistan, industrialists with the help of tax officials not only evade tax but also weaken the economic foundation of our country.
Trade of our country is shrinking every year due to energy crisis and bad governance. There is no transparency and corruption is rampant. The political system is unable to stem the tide of corruption. The G-8 declaration should be taken seriously in Pakistan. We should take drastic steps to curb these interrelated issues.
We should impose exemplary punishment to offenders in order to curb these menaces. We should create a foolproof system to stop tax evasion and resolve the energy crisis to increase our exports and mitigate the dependence on foreign countries.
