Man drowns in Indus

KOHAT, June 28: A labourer drowned in the Indus River after he fell from the under-construction Khushalgarh bridge here on Friday. The police said that Latifullah lost foothold while repairing the iron bridge and fell into the river. His body could not be recovered till filing of this report. —Correspondent

Woman killed on road

TIMERGARA, June 28: A woman was killed and her husband and two minor children were injured when the car they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a ravine at Maidan in Lower Dir on Friday.

The police said the family of Ali Haidar was going from Kas to Nanbaty village in Maidan.

They said the car went out of driver’s control at a sharp turn and plunged into ravine. As a result, Ali Haidar’s wife was killed, while he and his two children, aged seven and four, were injured.

Local people retrieved the injured from the ravine and shifted them to hospital. —Correspondent

Students get cash prizes

LAKKI MARWAT, June 28: Lakki Marwat Deputy Commissioner Nisar Ahmad on Friday distributed cash prizes and shields among the students who secured top positions in the secondary school certificate examinations.

He also gave away shields and commendation certificates to the headmasters and principals of high and higher secondary schools in recognition of their hard work to show hundred per cent results in examinations.

A ceremony in this respect was held in the government centennial model high school, Lakki.

Mr Nisar asked the teachers to focus on character building of students to enable them to face future challenges in a better way.

“Moral education will lead students to success besides enabling them to become good citizens,” he maintained. He said students of private schools topped the examinations because they were offered better incentives.

He said the district administration would provide funds to the centennial model school for purchasing furniture and power generator. —Correspondent

Teachers threaten protest

TIMERGARA, June 28: Teachers on Friday threatened to launch protest demonstrations if Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government didn’t review the proposed promotion policy.

The demand was made at a meeting of the All CT Teachers Association, Lower Dir chapter, presided over by its chairman Nasrullah.

The participants expressed concern over the proposed one-third formula for teachers’ promotion in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They said under the new formula, senior teachers would be deprived of their rights.

The participants said promotions up to senior school teachers should be made on batch and year-wise basis.

Meanwhile, at another meeting senior school teachers demanded of the government to immediately start construction of all the schools damaged during militancy in the district.

They also demanded appointment of honest and efficient staff in the educational boards in the region. They said batch wise and year wise promotion should be ensured for senior teachers. —Correspondent

Police inaction resented

MARDAN, June 28: Relatives of a man and a little girl, who were killed by a police van on June 21, have demanded of the provincial government and the Chief Justice of Pakistan to provide them with justice.

Speaking at press conference here on Friday, Zawar Khan, Mohammad Saleem and Saif-u-Rehman of Tambulak village said on June 21 a police van hit their relative, Uzair, and his niece Atiqa (6) when they were on a motorcycle on Mardan-Nowshera road leaving them critically injured.

They said the injured were taken to Mardan Medical Complex but they died there due to non-availability of doctors.

They said the family had lodged a case against the police driver and Dr Amjid Ali of Mardan Medical Complex for their negligence in the incident. But, police were not taking action against the accused. —Correspondent

Special allowance

PESHAWAR, June 28: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Engineer Shaukatullah has restored the ‘Mawajab allowance’ of the maliks of Darra Adamkhel. He has directed the Kohat commissioner to ensure disbursement of the amount to the tribal elders at the earliest.

It merits a mention here that the ‘Mawajab allowance’ of the tribal elders of Darra Adamkhel, which falls in the jurisdiction of Frontier Region, Kohat, remained suspended for quite some time.—APP
