Welcome to Dawn.com’s live coverage of the crucial Champions Trophy Group ‘B’ encounter between Pakistan and South Africa. It will be a match that both sides must win to harbour any hopes of making the tournament's semi-finals. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has tried to take the pressure off his side by insisting a 'do or die' clash against South Africa was nothing new for the team but both teams will be feeling the heat after having lost their first matches. Pakistan's batsmen, in particular, must step up their game against a side which will be missing the services of its two strike bowlers.

This is Taimur Sikander, stick around as Dawn.com brings all the action, comments and analysis from the match.

WICKET! That's it! The Pakistani fans will be glad this over, it was a surprisingly overcautious attempt with the bat by Misbah's men! McLaren knocks Junaid off-stump out of the ground and South Africa, deservedly, win by 67 runs. Clearly, no lessons were learnt by Pakistan from their first game against the West Indies, team selection was once again questionable, and it is safe to say, there are no realistic chances for Misbah's men in the Champions Trophy now! They will now face-off against India on June 15 in what may still be a cracking, albeit meaningless match if it doesn't come down to run-rate by then. According to Cricinfo, there is hope yet for Pakistan though, but only if Windies win both their remaining matches, and Pakistan beat India. Then Pakistan, India and South Africa will all have one win each, bringing NRR into play. If any of those results don't happen Pakistan are out. Coming back to this match, the stars were no doubt Hashim Amla (81) and Chris Morris, who had a memorable debut match with 7-25-2. Morris did the early and the most decisive damage and Ryan McLaren later picked up four wickets for 19 runs from 8 overs.

Pakistan came into the tournament with question marks over their batting. Two games in, there's still question marks all over it. In the end a very comprehensive victory for South Africa. Pakistan have got some work to do even if they're going to threaten in the next game. - Dirk Nannes, BBC Test Match Special

00:19 PST

WICKET! Ajmal falls attempting the pull off McLaren and walks off in disgust, most likely reserved for the team's batsmen!

00:13 PST

WICKET! Wahab smacks Phangiso for couple of boundaries before being bowled! Why try the reverse sweep when you have just picked up two fours with normal shots? But Wahab can't be blamed here, the 'batsmen' left too much to be desired! PAK 163/8 in 43 overs.

00:05 PST

WICKET! Misbah falls and perhaps that's the game! He tried to heave it over mid-wicket but only managed to find Hashim Amla in the circle! PAK 148/7 in 41.3 overs!

00:02 PST

Required rate 9.77 as Tsotsobe comes in to bowl! Wahab and Misbah are probably sweating in their gloves because mentally they will know this will take some doing!

23:57 PST

SIX! Misbah smacks Peterson over long off, that was a flat six! Many, many more need if Pakistan are even going get close to this! PAK 141/6 in 40, 94 needed!

23:53 PST

WICKET! Umar Amin falls and is quickly followed by Kamran Akmal who's fierce cut is picked up brilliantly by Du Plessis at point! Pakistan looking down the barrel now! PAK 134/6 in 39 overs.

23:47 PST

FOUR! Umar Amin made room for himself before smacking Morris straight down the ground for a boundary. They pick up seven from that over, 107 needed off 12 overs! PAK 128/4 in 38 overs.

23:45 PST

Pakistan have scored 13 in the last two over, a little bit of activity at least but this won't win it for Misbah's men. PAK 121/4 in 37 overs.

23:37 PST

FOUR! Two boundaries in that Morris over after drinks. First, a very unconvincing looking attempted pull from Amin, the ball catches his thigh and races towards fine leg. The second very convincing though! Misbah smacks the bowler over mid-on's head.

23:32 PST

The batting powerplay has been taken! Misbah and Amin still blocking though and with the required rate over 8, this is looking very tough now for Pakistan. Ehsan Adil had come out with a message from the Pakistan camp, what could it have been? Kamran Akmal and Wahab Riaz, the 'hitters', if you can call them that, in the bank. PAK 108/4 in 35 overs as players take drinks. 127 required off 15 overs. 23:22 PST

Phangiso living up to his reputation as a constrictor and Duminy looking like Graeme Swann to the Pakistani batsmen. Misbah and Amin currently seem to have know answers. The required rate has climbed to over 7 an over, how long before the big shot comes out? PAK 98/4 in 32.

23:06 PST

WICKET! Jamshed goes! Tsotsobe held that one back a little and Jamshed was early into that shot, simple caught-and-bowled that! Pakistan lose another batsman just as a partnership was developing. Umar Amin is the new man in and he will have to play a big hand for sure today and justify his selection over Asad Shafiq! He is capable, very capable.

22:56 PST

Pakistan have scored 23 in the last five overs, Misbah and Jamshed picking up a boundary each. Much better, but there's a big task up ahead and whatever they do, the Pakistanis cannot afford to lose another wicket here.

22:31 PST

WICKET! Duminy get the breakthrough! Malik a little unfortunate there! He put a long stride to block that one and the ball after hitting the bat rolls onto the stumps. This is not looking good for Pakistan! Misbah walks in. Morris back into the attack.

teams are making chasing look like such a task! ..need more belief.. they need to eliminate fear. Shruti Chopra ‏@itstarot now (Twitter)

22:23 PST

FOUR! Jamshed gets that stride in and picks Phangiso over mid-off for four! Seven runs from that over, and by current standards, that is a big one! Pakistan must look for more. Duminy into the attack now. PAK 47/2 from 17 overs.

22:19 PST

Every South African player inside the circle is at least 10 yards in from the line - they're charging in. There's no alarm bells for Pakistan yet, but on a wicket like this you can't really go at over six an over for too long. - Dirk Nannes, BBC Test Match Special

22:11 PST

FOUR! That's come out of the blue! Jamshed pulls McLaren towards square-leg and that almost lands over the ropes. The first real stroke of aggression from the Pakistanis! PAK 35/2 in 14 overs.

22:01 PST

Aaron Phangiso comes into the attack, he's got a first-class average of 35.39 in 59 matches and is known for his immaculate accuracy. Ryan McLaren bowling from the other end, Pakistan's strike rate 2.41 at the moment! Pakistan do want to play catch under lights, it will be tricky! PAK 27/2 in 12 overs.

21:48 PST

WICKET! Hafeez falls to the short ball! That delivery was heading towards the batsman's head and he was in no positional at all to play that! That's poor batting and for a man of Hafeez's experience, much more was expected! Malik in now. PAK 18/2 in 7.5

21:45 PST

FOUR! Jamshed clips it Morris off his pads for a much, much-need boundary!

21:40 PST

Pakistan move 12/1 in 6 overs. Chris Morris has been fast and accurate, he's in the mould of a classic fast bowler who also has a few things to say to the batsmen! Lonwabo Tsotsobe has been tight and he will keep on pitching it in the right areas and create pressure.

21:30 PST

What is the future of Imran Farhat? Fans and critics keep wondering why he keeps making the squad despite an average of 31 in an ODI career spanning more than a decade. True, he's been in and out but he really hasn't rectified the mistakes because of which he has been dropped countless times. Does he provide stability at the top? Is he a dasher? Is he a great fielder? The answers to all these are pretty obvious and for this the Pakistan management must be held accountable. Surely, Pakistan could gamble with Kamran Akmal at the top if scoring runs is not a priority?

21:21 PST

WICKET! Pakistan have gotten off to the worst possible start, as Imran Farhat is bowled by Chris Morris. There was a big gap between bat and pad and the knives will be out once again for an opener who just doesn't seem comfortable at the top level.

20:42 PST

WICKET! And the South African innings ends with yet another run-out! Pakistan have been alert in the field and also hit the target! Four run-outs in all and after Amla's fluent 81 off 97 balls, there was nothing substantial from the Proteas. Pakistan were great with the ball all day, Hafeez being the pick of them with 10-38-1 and Irfan with his 7-27-1 providing great support! Despite the cloudy conditions, the wicket was not too bad for batting. Under lights, though, it may be a tricky proposition. The 234/9 could have been much bigger had AB stayed for a little longer. The onus, once again, is on the Pakistani batsman, who have been given a more than achievable task through the brilliance of their bowlers. Imran Farhat will have a lot to prove after being hounded by fans and critics recently for his repeated failures and Jamshed will need to be steady and mature about the way he goes about.

20:39 PST

WICKET! Another run-out. Wahab bowls it quick and straight, Peterson hits it straight to bowler who gathers and hits the stumps at the non-striker's end to run Chris Morris out! Wahab's been on the money here!

20:35 PST

WICKET! 4,4,4 and gone! Junaid picks up the dangerous Miller as Misbah takes a neat catch! SA have a decent score though, 231/7 in 49 overs.

20:26 PST

FOUR! As we have seen in the past, Wahab does have a tendency to lose his focus, the last couple of deliveries have been low full-tosses and Miller helps one towards the fine leg boundary! SA 216/6 in 48 overs.

20:23 PST

Wahab into the attack now, Miller takes guard and the left-handed batsman will be looking to repeat his fireworks in the IPL. He's joined by Peterson on the other end. SA 208/6 in 47 overs.

This could be another of those tight, low-scoring matches; the score is struggling to go to an imposing total. The way Pakistan have been batting, anything could happen. - Jim Maxwell, BBC Test Match Special

20:15 PST

WICKET! Malik picks up McLaren LBW. The batsman reviewed that one but the ball was just clipping the leg-stump. South Africa's late charge hasn't really come because Pakistan have picked up regular wickets.

20:07 PST

WICKET! Another run-out! South Africa, often guilty of not handling pressure well, have given away two big wickets to Pakistan, Duminy, who was involved in the run-out of skipper AB, has now suffered the same fate. David Miller and Ryan McLaren at the crease now and they can yet repair the damage, both are capable hitters. Ajmal back into the attack against the two lefties. SA 199/5 in 44 overs.

When you've run out yourself and the captain, don't expect a warm return to the dressing room. Find a corner and sit in it. - Charles Dagnall, BBC Test Match Special↵ ↵ 19:52: PST

WICKET! Pakistan pick up the prized wicket of AB de Villiers, well it can be safely said that his partner, Duminy, sold him a dummy! Duminy clipped it straight into the hands of Misbah at mid-wicket and rushed out but hit the brakes but unfortunately for AB his spikes did not help him much there. Misbah ran up to the stumps to take the bails off while AB was still on the ground! This is big for Pakistan because AB could have easily propelled South Africa to something substantial in the final few overs.

pak need to gear up for SA onslaught in the last ten overs. They got wickets in hand. -@awaIs_dotcom

19:35 PST

Wahab Riaz bowls a couple of short deliveries and South Africa keep up their momentum with singles, taking five off the over.

only in england you can see pakistani doing the 'bhangra' on dil dil pakistan. -@QuickCkt

19:30 PST

The batting powerplay comes to an end as South Africa look comfortable with 163 runs for the loss of three wickets after 36 overs.

19:24 PST

FOUR! Duminy slams Ajmal threw the covers where a diving Wahab is unable to stop the ball from reaching the boundary! JP Duminy and AB will be busy here and look to attack. SA 155/3 in 34 overs.

19:20 PST

WICKET! Amla goes attempting another reverse-sweep off Ajmal. He showed his cards to early and Ajmal kept it short and fast, the ball hit Amla's gloves and lobbed to short third-man where Hafeez took a neat diving catch. SA 146/3 in 32 overs.

19:11 PST

SIX! AB puts Malik into the stand, picked the length of that shortish delivery very early and hit it over mid-wicket. SA 144/2 in 31 overs.

19:06 PST

South Africa move to 134/2 in 30 overs, at 4.46 runs this is not bad, keeping in mind that JP Duminy and the highly-explosive David Miller are yet to come. Shoaib Malik into the attack now, bowling his first over of the Champions Trophy.

18:59 PST

WICKET! Irfan gets the breakthrough! This was much-needed for Pakistan. This banged in short and the ball hit the bottom of the bat as Du Plessis attempted to pull only for the ball to lob straight into the hands of Shoaib Malik at cover! AB de Villier comes in.

18:53 PST

FOUR! Faf du Plessis pulls out the big slog sweep against Ajmal, South Africa are scoring over 4 here and with 9 wickets still in hand, there could be some late fireworks from the Proteas!

18:50 PST

Wicket, wicket, its time 2 get a wicket! But boys bowling nice & tight so far. But seriously, a wicket soon pls. ‏- @alexwhatmore (Pakistani coach Dav Whatmore's daughter weighs in on the situation. SA 109/1 in 26 overs.

18:40 PST

FOUR! Quite a deliberate attempt by Amla to throw Ajmal off, he's tried clipping it towards square-leg, used his feet and twice reverse-sweeped him, one of which is hit very fine into the third man boundary! Great batting, Amla has an average of over 50 in England, needless to say he enjoys these conditions. SA 105/1 in 25 overs.

18:32 PST

Hashim Amla raises his bat for another fine half-century as Saeed Ajmal comes into the attack now. Amla vs Ajmal will once again be a great battle! 85/1 in 22 overs.

18:24 PT

FOUR! Amla looking more and more assured now, not that he's never too circumspect. Wahab has not been able to find the same lines and lengths as he did against the Windies and the odd one he has thrown a little wide, Amla has made full use of them. SA 78/1 in 20 overs.

18:15 PST

FOUR! Hafeez throws it up and Amla attempts to throw it out of the ground but only manages an outside edge, the balls flies by where first slip should have been! SA 64/1 in 17 overs.

18:10 PST

"It must be 95% Pakistan - all around the crowd there are flags waving. The South Africans are all sat on their flags." - Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

18:03 PST

WICKET! Hafeez traps Ingram and thus continues his great run against left-handed batsmen! The batsman tried to sweep, the ball straightened after pitching and was heading quite comfortably towards the stumps. Ingram was deceived by that 'little' variation in length by Hafeez. SA 56/1 in 15 overs.

18:01 PST

FOUR! After bowling a tidy few balls, Wahab gives just a bit of room to Amla outside off who times this perfectly to the left of point! SA 52/0 in 14 overs.

17:54 PST

Wahab Riaz starts his spell well here, 6 from that over which included a 'Chinese cut' from Amla. Riaz has won back quite a few of his fans back after that performance against the West Indies where he had Samuels and Pollard hopping. There's no doubt that he can crank it up which the Pakistani fans, spoilt by the feats of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis get easily excited by, but he must maintain discipline which is not something that comes easily to him.

17:49 PST

Is the yorker dying, metaphorically if not literally? Osman Samiuddin asks. The Pakistani bowlers should take note, read here.

17:47 PST

Mohammad Hafeez has come into the attack now as South Africa have slowly moved to 37/0 in 10 overs. Hafeez has a great record against lefties and Ingram will be cautious here.

17:38 PST

The talking point from the Pakistan-West Indies game was quite obviously Pakistan's thin effort with the bat as a courtesy of which Asad Shafiq has been dropped today. Imran Farhat has somehow survived once again despite being one of the most loathed among the fans. Shoaib Akhtar aptly put it when he said in one of his recent interviews that 'Farhat is getting out the same way as he was 10 years ago' but perhaps this is another opportunity for the left-handed opener to put things right. The other opener, Nasir Jamshed, also came in for a stick after recklessly giving his wicket away against the West Indies and prompted Misbah to publically reprimand the young batsman. The two along with Shoaib Malik must step up today!

17:33 PST

FOUR! Two great shots by Amla. Minimal effort with the first as he clips Junaid toward deep midwicket before following it up with the classic 'leg glance' for another boundary! SA 28/0 in 8 overs.

17:24 PST

FOUR! Colin Ingram swivels and puts that short delivery from Junaid Khan to the square-leg boundary! Barring the little bit of cloud cover, these are good batting conditions. SA 19/0 in 6 overs.

Yorkshire teen breaks 91-year county age record: Teenager Matthew Fisher turned his thoughts to schoolwork and a pending French oral exam after becoming the youngest cricketer in 91 years to play in a competitive English county match on Sunday. The seamer, aged 15 years and 212 days, turned out for Yorkshire in a three-wicket defeat by Leicestershire and took one for 40 from seven overs as well as scoring 10 runs off four balls. He broke the previous mark for a youngest player, set by Glamorgan's Royston Gabe-Jones in 1922, by 62 days.

17:18 PST

DROPPED! It was a tough chance, Amla smashed this once again and the ball thuds into the outstretched left hand of Umar Amin at point. SA 15/0 in 5 overs.

17:17 PST

FOUR! Amla cuts Irfan over point for the first boundary of the innings! Like an artist's brush stroke that.

17:15 PST

The conditions are heavy and there's no doubt who the crowd is supporting here, great atmosphere. Both Junaid and Irfan are are trying to pitch it up more often unlike the game against the West Indies where there were a barrage of bouncers against the likes of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels and Kieron Pollard. SA 9/0 in 4 overs.

17:06 PST

Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan have started off well here, there's a bit of life in the pitch here and South Africa have moved cautious to 3/0 in 2 overs.

Pak fans gave the SA squad a "warm" welcome as they left the team bus. A few verbals & lots of shouts of Pakistan Zindabad. - @Saj_PakPassion (Twitter)
