Misbah not impressed with Ramdin over 'catch'

LONDON: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq slammed West Indies wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin for wrongly claiming a catch during Friday's gripping Champions Trophy clash at The Oval.

Misbah scored a career-best 96 not out in his side's two-wicket defeat in south London but thought he was out for nought when Ramdin claimed a catch off man-of-the-match Kemar Roach.

Australian umpire Steve Davis gave Misbah out but, following the intervention of English official Nigel Llong at square leg, the decision was referred to third umpire Tony Hill.

Replays showed that while Ramdin had, initially, caught the ball, he had subsequently allowed it to spill out of his grasp.

Eventually it was decided that Ramdin did not have full control over the ball and Misbah was reprieved.

Had he been dismissed, Pakistan would have been 17 for four.

As it was, they went on to make 170 all out before their bowlers made West Indies work hard to reach a seemingly modest victory total.

“What can I say about that? He (Ramdin) should have told (the umpire) what happened,” said Misbah.

“I don't know what he was thinking at that time.

“I don't think I would be happy if my wicket-keeper did that,” added Misbah.

“If you don't know if it is (a catch) then fine, but if you know it's not a catch you shouldn't claim it because it's not in the spirit of the game.”

West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo defended Ramdin against accusations of bad sportsmanship, insisting the keeper genuinely believed he'd held on for long enough to claim a fair catch.

“Denesh thought he honestly had control of the ball,” Bravo said.

“He is a very honest player and history shows that we as a country don't have any stigma of negativity around us. We play the game in the right way. I don't see anything wrong with it.”

While Roach was denied the wicket of Misbah, he took the first three wickets to fall as Pakistan collapsed to 15 for three. The paceman finished with a man-of-the-match-winning return of three for 28 off 10 overs while off-spinner Sunil Narine took three for 34.

West Indies then collapsed themselves before Ramdin and Roach saw them home with just under 10 overs left.

Defeat effectively left Pakistan probably needing to win their final pool games against India and South Africa if they were to advance from Group B to the semi-finals. But Misbah insisted all was far from lost.

“It is possible. We have seen it happen so many times before,” the Pakistan captain said. “We just need to be a bit more responsible with our batting.

“We should have got 230 or 240 here. That would have been a good total.

“Even 15 or 20 runs could have made the difference. There is nothing to be worried about. We just need to score those extra runs.”

Great innings Misbah and leading from the front! Its a shame Malik, Akmal,Farhat all threw their wickets needlessly. Another 20 runs could have made it a winning total. Champion trophy 2004 against Windies Pakistan team that had Inzimam, Yousaf and Shoib Akhter folded for 131 against a much worse attack. It would have been the same if it was not for Misbah's steely performance. They lost but they Misbah and the bowlers fought hard. Not bad for a 39 year old cricketer most Pakistanis love to write off.

Misbah is being over confident. He should be more firm with his batsmen, specially the top order. From now on, it is do or die. If they don't shape up, then it is all over for them. For you country's sake, become more responsible and show some maturity on and off the field. Good luck and may Allah help you guys.

The Pak batsmens should be accountable of their performance, in no way this batting show is acceptable. Selectors should learn from this, Why in the world Shoaib Malik, Imran Farhat and Asad Shafiq is playing and Younis, Yousuf & Umar Akmal are out. Selectors have their personal choices preceding the national interest. We have grown seeing batting problem and it is shame at this level no other team has worst record then of ours....Ramdin incident was very ugly, I don't care what BRavo says, video is out there which tells you truth he knew he dropped it but pretended. this is very unfortunate coming from WI player who is known for sportsman ship but it just does not justify one individual wrong action. Ramdin and his captain owe Apology!!! as simple it gets rather than going around it proving innocent.

Though I am not great fan of Misbah. However, he played his best innings by scoring 96* and taking Pakistan out crisis. He deserved to score century but was unlucky as anyone barely supported him. Pakistan was 20-30 runs short. Our batsmen lacked temprament and application to play shots. It showed how our batting is weak. Only bowling can not win matches but it has to be a team effort to achieve victory as well. Pakistan will find it extra hard to win against India and South Africa. My prayers are that Pakistan wins next two matches and enter semi-final. For that they have to work hard on field and play with proper temprament. Imran Farhat and Shoaib Malik deserve no place in team at all as they have failed to deliver and have been continously failing.

I am at pain continuously, and feel that when you leave a good player like Razzaq behind, he is continuously suffering with injustice to him, and take Imran Farhat with you, who takes so many balls to make few runs, then you deserve to suffer a defeat. You barely won against Ireland, and were just lucky not to loose the series against Ireland, so there was no surprise today for us when you lost against West Indies, and more tougher teams will make you for the blunders the selectors do while selecting sifarashis and leaving behind talented players. We Pakistanis are unfortunate that for those at helm of affairs, merit has no value. So we are ready to see more defeats for Pakistan team. In such cases only prayers do not help.

Even a goof knows that it takes a while for English pitches to yield runs. Out batsmen were in a hurry to play their shots. Slow and steady batting succeeds in English weather. I only hope our batsmen have learnt a thing or two from the defeat. I swear to God almighty I told my wife that Nasir would go after 50 and he DID! Misbah at other end would have told him to start afresh from his half century. Probably he didn't or if he did Nasir true to charachter, threw his wicket and match away.

@Afif Naeem: After the SA tour, the trolls here wanted Misbah out of the team and now they would like to see Shoaib Malik axed. You don't know the game so give it a break, please!
