KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi sentenced Shahrukh Jatoi, the main accused in the Shahzeb murder case, to death in its verdict on Friday.

Moreover, another suspect, Siraj Talpur, was also awarded capital punishment for his role in the crime.

Whereas, two other suspects in the case, Sajjad Ali Talpur and Ghulam Murtaza Lashari were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The ATC also announced that the convicted individuals would have to pay a fine of Rs 500,000 each. Moreover, Jatoi was handed an added three years prison sentence for illegal possession of weapons.

As soon as the judgment was announced, Jatoi's brother got into an argument with judges and had to be taken out of the court's premises.

Due to which, the detailed judgment of the case could not be signed by those convicted and they were sent away. They were, however, called back to the court's premises and asked to sign the judgment.

The convicted individuals were then taken towards central jail.

Later, family members of those convicted said they would file an appeal challenging the court's judgment.

Moreover, Jatoi's lawyer, Shaukat Hussain Zuberi, said he would file an appeal within seven days of today's ruling. Zuberi said the case's investigation was flawed from the very beginning.

A senior advocate, Kamal Azfar, recently filed a petition in the Sindh High Court to revisit the evidence on the weapon from which Jatoi fired at Shahzeb. That petition was also rejected today.

Speaking to DawnNews, Shahzaib's father said he was satisfied with the court's verdict.

Twenty-year-old Shahzeb Khan was gunned down on the night of December 24, 2012 when he was returning home along with his sister after attending a wedding. Shahzeb, son of a DSP, was murdered reportedly after he had an altercation with one of the suspects’ servant who had allegedly given verbal threats to the victim’s sister.

Jatoi, Siraj Talpur, his younger brother Sajjad Talpur and their house servant Ghulam Murtaza Lashari were charged with killing Shahzeb in the city’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA).

The case had attracted much media attention after the Supreme Court took a suo motu notice of the murder.

This is a great day for Pakistan. It could well be a turning point in Pakistan's judicial history. A rich man has been found guilty by the court. I congratulate the people of Pakistan on this seminal occasion.

It is not a very happy occasion but it was necessary to build people's confidence in our judicial system.

June 7, 2013 12:28 pm

On leaving the court the main accused is smiling and making V signs, as if he's sure that he'll be let off in the end!!I can't believe it!!!

June 7, 2013 12:30 pm

@EjazAhmed: Why should they stop using titles? A title is pretty much a part of someones name. Just because someone is a defendant doesn't mean they loose their title or position or anything.

June 7, 2013 12:32 pm

justice well done.

First time in Pakistan's history, Justice was served! Hope they cannot appeal the sentence. All credit goes to the media and youth who have forced the judges to be fair, otherwise they would have taken money and released the murderers as usual.

June 7, 2013 12:56 pm

They'll be freed by the higher court. No one of influence ever gets a sentence carried out unless the prosecution is equally strong (Bhutto vs. Zia). These kids Shahrukh Jatoi and Siraj Talpur will be political leaders in 10 years.

The courts MUST reject the appeals and make sure the accused are given the death penalty. This death penalty is very important to change the feudal culture of our society. This death penalty is very important for the Better Pakistan !!

If they do not receive the death penalty, similar incidents will again happen.

I am very happy to see the Justice being done. Now the execution of the convicted Jatoi MUST be done. I hope higher courts don't delay it long due to appeals.

Justice done without taking care of ethnicity, wealth, power is true justice son of king should be treated as son of a labourer. Keep it going fellow men put your part in strengthening Pakistan's institutions.

June 7, 2013 1:17 pm

Pakistan needs to be purified of these illegitimate Nawabs,Waderas and other feudals ,if the country has to develop into a Islamic, democratic, welfare state!I hope the good for nothing police and lower judiciary have done their job properly as regards the evidence and the higher courts dont completely overturn this verdict!

More than Shahrukh Jatoi , his father should be punished more severely . It is these kind of parents who let their children roam like untamed animals with the notion that they can get away with murder if they have money and power to back them up . Shahrukh Jatoi remained in the hostels of the schools which are mainly for rich and spoiled kids with no parental supervision . The parents are too busy enjoying the frills of power and dont care at all what their kids are doing . I hope other rich parents and their kids learn a lesson from this episode . This is a clear cut case of the evils of"Waderaism". I feel sorry for the murdered kid and his parents but I also feel a strange kind of sympathy for these spoiled kids who became murderers due to total lack of supervision and guidance of their parents.

They murdered that young boy, who was only 20 years old on the day of his sister's valima!! Being so young themselves, they displayed no characteristics of humanity, killed him in cold blood. imagine what these dangerous boys might be capable of when they grow old. Pakistan's justice system has to prove itself, although the victim was the son of a DSP, i hope justice is served to the family.

June 7, 2013 1:20 pm

@EjazAhmed: Totally agree with you, they should not be referred to as Nawab's or even Humans for that matter.

June 7, 2013 1:21 pm

I blame the parents of Shahrukh Jatoi for all the unfortunate happenings. A child is what his or her parents bring out of them. Wealth and liberty can sometimes spoil a child beyond correction. May ALLAH provide this as a lesson to all parents. Sad. Very. Sad.

June 7, 2013 1:22 pm

I hope this decision of justice will prove hinderance in the way of future SHARUKHS killing innocents Shahzebs...well done court
