DUBLIN: Kamran Akmal and tailender Wahab Riaz made a late recovery to help Pakistan beat Ireland by two wickets on Sunday to win 1-0 in the two-match, one-day international series.

Akmal scored 81 off 85 balls and Riaz plundered four sixes and four fours in an unbeaten 47 off 35 balls to help Pakistan score 230-8 in 48.4 overs.

The 93-run stand for the eighth wicket off 62 balls overshadowed Ireland top-order batsman Ed Joyce's unbeaten 116 off 132 balls, which steered Ireland to 229-9.

Pakistan's chase was in tatters at 133-7 in the 37th over before Akmal and Riaz launched a counterattack against the inexperienced Ireland bowlers.

Last Thursday, the first match ended in a tie on the Duckworth/Lewis Method when Ireland made a spirited reply and scored 275-5.

The short tour was part of Pakistan's preparation for next month's Champions Trophy in England.

Veteran Ireland seamer Trent Johnston _ one of the four players from the Ireland team that knocked Pakistan out of the 2007 World Cup in West Indies with a three-wicket win _ and Tim Murtagh reduced Pakistan to 17-4.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who was dropped on 0 by Paul Stirling low down in the slips, added 43 with Shoaib Malik (43) before sending a tame return catch to Alex Cusack.

Ireland kept the pressure on Pakistan's brittle batting lineup, with leftarm spinner George Dockrell trapping Malik lbw in the 34th over. Three overs later, Abdur Rehman was brilliantly caught in the covers by Kevin O'Brien to raise Ireland spirits.

However, Akmal and Riaz changed gears. Riaz hit Murtagh for three sixes and a four in one over, and Akmal was equally belligerent in hitting 11 boundaries and two sixes.

Akmal tried to finish the match off but skyed a catch when only four runs were needed, but Riaz and Junaid Khan took Pakistan to victory.

Earlier, Joyce anchored the innings by hitting a dozen boundaries and a six as Pakistan opted to field first after winning the toss.

The visitors reduced the home team to 4-2 when Khan removed Stirling without scoring and newcomer Asad Ali claimed the wicket of captain William Porterfield for 1.

Left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman, one of three bowlers changed by Pakistan, took 4-48.

Stirling's dismissal in the first over pegged the home team back as Khan and Ali dominated with the new ball.

Joyce played 17 ODIs for England in 2006-07, including hitting 107 against Australia at Sydney. In 2010, he was granted special permission by the International Cricket Council to switch back to his country of birth.

Joyce featured in two productive stands _ 65 with Niall O'Brien (29) for the third wicket and a run-a-ball 94 with Kevin O'Brien (38) for the fifth.

Joyce got a lucky break when he was dropped on 61 by Mohammad Hafeez at point off Ali before he cut loose and added 53 in the batting powerplay with Kevin. Joyce hit his century off 120 balls by sending Rehman for a six before the left-armer hit back with two quick wickets to reduce Ireland to 189-8.

However, Joyce added 40 in the last five overs. Pakistan's bowlers also helped Ireland's cause by bowling 17 wides.

Worst Pak opening pair in history!! Play against Ireland, batting pitch and batting 2nd cant not even score 3 runs in an over. Remind me a test pair of 70's. We are really going backwards with mediocre players like Farhat, Jamshed,Malik,Amin, Adil and Wahab. Junaid & Irfan lost their rhythm after Wasim's tips. Batting practice in Abbot does not help us. No chance at all for us in CT 2013.

8/1 in 5.4 overs (Farhat 5 of 24, Jamshed 0 of 8). Does it really justified selection?

17/4 in 9.3 overs this team has all sorts of quality to be the last in CT-2013. ICC should revoke our ODI status until we get rid of corruption.

Somene asked why is Farhat in the team. Good question, we are searching for the answer for last 12 yeasrs. No one knows, since 2001. They say give him another 5-6 years and he wil start making some runs. Against BD and Zimbabwe, if not against better teams.

@Mohammad Shafi: NO....and this is their performance against Ireland in a one-off ODI. Now imagine what the batting order will do against Aus, Eng, SA???

What a terrific batting Kamran Akmal and Wahab Riaz reminded me of 1979 World cup match between India and Zimbabwe when Kapil Dev played gem of innings.Today it was turn of Kamran Akmal. Its time for Pakistan to rest Nasir Jamshed. He has no clue what he is doing in team and replace him with another better player who can score runs.He is struggling against every body on all pitches.Pakistan can use Wahab Riaz as good later order hitter.Abdul Rehman produced incredible spell of Spin bowling.Feel so sorry he has to sit out so many times.Pakistan can replace Imran Farhat with better batsman if anyone else can score runs.

it is practice game and the team should play few more to give opportunity to the batsmen to get in the form before the tournament. Imran Farhat and Nasir will step up and do well and the rest of the team will do well too. Shoaib and Misbah got some runs and kamran struck form in this match, also Raiz got back to hammer around the opponent bowling. please do not right away start saying bad things about the team. yes, it will be nice and encouraging for the team to have afridi and razzaq and if possible imran nazir, too. but all desires do not come through due to the systems. Good luck team.

Farhat gets selected based on domestic his performance which only proves a failure in international matches with the exception of hard to find one match in South Africa. He is otherwise a consistent failure. Jamshed keep getting selected because of his one-time good performance in India. He is also a consistent failure otherwise. Comparing these two, at the least Farhat looks physically fit whereas Jamshed when fielding almost simulates a Gorilla trying to get hold of a ball. Watch him in videos and you'll find lots of similarities between him and a Gorilla trying to field. However both Farhat and Jamshed are failures in general. But in Pakistan who would ever self-asses himself and why as long as Selection committee is there to select such low calibre players.

To all the people out there who have been bashing Kamran Akmal & Shoaib Malik; well 'who' saved the day? K Akmal & S Malik - you Mofos! The top five batsmen (Farhat all the way down to Haq) did Jack! It is evident that the team needs above two plus Afridi, U Akmal & Razzaq. It is high time that PCB fires Iqbal Qasim & the rest of waste to structure the team!!!!

One innings in one year against an associate team and you can become hero, that is the fickle nature of our cricket fans

It may also be that Ireland are turning into a great team, they deserve to be put up to Test slot and Bangladesh must be relegated for their poor show since 1999. Believe me, Afghanistan would have done beter than them with this mch money and resources thrown at them.

As for Pakistan, nothing more to add except that the day player selection was based on merit, we will be the top team. Look at Asad Ali's stats yesterday, I rate him better than Junaid, who has only peformed in two or three major matches and the rest of his stats are all over the place.

Very poor performance from Pakistan. Loks like there is no proper batsman left in Pakistan. Imran Farhat is waste of time, he got about 1000 chnces and never score. Needs proper team combination. Very much doubt that pakistan even can qualify for semi final in CT

Phewww ... what a breath taking performance against the giant that is Ireland!!

entire team must be patting themselves on their collective back for pulling this miracle of a victory against a formidable Ireland. This team is a collection of perpetual non-performers, failures, and mediocres. They get world class monetary compensation and in return we have to bear with watching them struggling against minnows. Seriously, ICC should consider dropping this current Pakistani cricket setup to associate rank.

Imran Farhat? really we have no alternates to this guy? Openers were almost set with Hafeez and Jamshed..both have to given the confidence to think THEY ARE THE ANCHORS from now on. Right before the Champions trophy another shuffle on top clearly means the PCB has not got its ducks in line yet. Imran Farhat has no confidence whatsoever, he wastes deliveries and gets out early atleast of he is existing early he should maintain a run a ball.....this was Ireland ( although I have to admit they are BETTER THAN BANGLADESH and should have been invited to join the ODI regular teams last year) how can our batsmen face.....South Africa?.......Misbah seems to be returning to form, good to see Shoaib back in the runs and most of all Kamran Akmal.......needs to be in the team till he performs. Some here were mentioned Afridi, Pakistanis should realize the gentleman has served Pakistan cricket and is past his prime, please don't ask for his return Pakistan has Razzaq though who should be back in the side, Bowling looked fairly ordinary too but they will settle in before the CT I am sure, there are jitters always in starting in a new place, different conditions, good to see the PCB plan of being in the area before a tournament working, Players will get used to it, first test was the windy seaming conditions against Ireland and Pakistans batting failed quite miserable so batsmen need to pull up their pants for sure and dig in.

@Mohammad Shafi: Why we even play. We should be ashamed of our selves, as how low we have fallen. When players like Farhat, Jamshed and Shoab Malik keep coming back, it's time to pack up and call it the day.

great to see Kamran Akmal playing gem of innings along with Wahab Riaz when entire team barring Sohaib Malik had collapsed.Jamshed finding too tough to bat in overseas condition.Need rest badly.Abdul Rahman scintillating performance along with Asad Ali.This was match which Pakistan was supposed to lose at 130 for 7,hopeless situation and still come out victorious is quite remarkable.
