PESHAWAR, Feb 27: The National Accountability Bureau, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday seized the alleged ill-gotten Rs40 million cash and expensive weapons during a raid on the house of an arrested police officer in Hayatabad area.

The NAB had arrested budget officer of the police department Javed Khan and contractor Arshad Majeed on Feb 21, 2013. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the bureau said the man had made important revelations during investigation.

The accused were produced in the court on Wednesday for getting further remand in NAB custody under Section 24 (d) of NAO, 1999. Under the law, physical remand up to 90 days can be obtained.

However, further remand was not granted by the accountability court and sent the accused to the judicial custody.

The court earlier gave five days remand of the accused during which they made important revelations.

On receipt of complaints, the NAB, KP had authorised an inquiry against police officers in the province and others for alleged embezzlement in procurement of weapons, equipment and vehicles in 2009-10 by violating the government rules and thus, causing huge loss to the state exchequer.

At the request of police, the government had approved the purchase and upgrading of weapons and equipment for its use to counter terrorism in the province.

Over Rs7 billion was released by the government for recruitment, training of policemen and procurement of weapons and equipment during the fiscal 2009-10.

During the inquiry, it was found that gross violation of procurement rules were committed by the purchase committee in award of tenders to favourite contractors, who had no experience of supplying such items and for which payments were made in advance. The inspection committee also found the accused responsible for not carrying out tests/trials of weapons, ammunition and equipment according to procedure and obtained clearance reports from agencies concerned. —Bureau Report
