Man with hashish arrested

LAKKI MARWAT, Jan 30: Police on Wednesday arrested a man while smuggling hashish to Punjab.

After receiving information, said an official, a party of Lakki police station headed by SHO Abdul Saboor Khan got alighted a suspect from a passenger bus at Darra Tang checkpost situated on the border with Mianwali district of Punjab.  The bus was going to Lahore from Bannu.

Police recovered 1,010 grams hashish from the luggage of the arrested drug trafficker Attiqullah, resident of Tore Lawangkhel. A case was registered against him under section 9 of the Control Narcotics Substance Act (CNSA), said the official. —Correspondent

Power tariff hike criticised

PESHAWAR, Jan 30: Qaumi Watan Party (QWP), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, chairman MPA Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao has criticised the government for raising the power tariff amid prolonged outages.

“The government must not put more burden on the people if it cannot provide them relief in the face of growing inflation,” he said while speaking at a public meeting in Battagram union council of Shabqadar on Wednesday, according to a press release.

Dozens of activists associated with different political parties announced joining the QWP. Sikandar Sherpao said electricity was being generated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but people of the province had been facing unprecedented loadshedding. Mr Sherpao said the rulers didn’t have the right to remain in power because they had failed to take steps for the wellbeing of the people.—Bureau Report

UoP dept’s golden jubilee

PESHAWAR, Jan 30: The golden jubilee of the department of political science of the University of Peshawar was celebrated on Wednesday.

A 90-pound cake was cut at a ceremony to mark the 50 years of excellence of the department. Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Rasul Jan was the chief guest while former chairman of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Service Commission Gulzar Khan, Dr Iqbal Tajik, Dr Fateh ur Rehman and other alumni of the department were also present, according to a press release.

Established in the year 1962, the department of political science is providing competent professionals to the civil and military institutions of Pakistan, said Dr AZ Hilali, chairman of the department in his remarks. Lifetime achievement award was conferred upon Ms Afsaar Saleem who was the first chairperson of the department. —Bureau Report

PPP intra-party polls demanded

PESAHWAR, Jan 30: The annoyed PPP workers on Wednesday held a protest demonstration outside Peshawar Press Club against the nomination of party office-bearers and demanded intra-party elections.

Holding banners and placards inscribed with demands for intra-party elections, they shouted slogans against the newly appointed office-bearers of the Peshawar district.

The demonstrators were led by PPP Workers Itehad chairman Syed Nazneen Bacha. Talking to reporters he alleged the office-bearers had been announced without taking the workers into confidence. He said some people who were imposed as office-bearers five years ago served only their own interests.—Bureau Report
