Man kills self, two wives

LANDI KOTAL, Nov 19: A man in Jamrud committed suicide after killing his two wives on Monday.

Sources said that Shah Khan, a resident of Ghundi, was not happy with routine quarrellings of his two wives and was also suffering from some mental illness. On Monday morning, he shot dead both his wives with a rifle and later ended his own life as well. Meanwhile, security forces in Sheen Qamar area of Bara defused three explosive devices planted along a track. At least three persons and three of their mules were killed in the same area when a mule loaded with food ration stepped over an improvised explosive device planted along the track the other day.—Correspondent

Varsity organises flower show

TIMERGARA, Nov 19: The University of Malakand opened a ‘Gul-i-Daudi’ exhibition at the varsity on Monday. The vice-chancellor Prof Johar Ali opened the exhibition during a ceremony which was attended by faculty members, administration and students.

Addressing the gathering, the vice chancellor said peace, harmony and tolerance were the hallmarks of a prosperous society. He said educational institutions must strive for the same and place such values at the top of their agendas.

“Flowers speak through their silence and inform us about the blessings of nature,” the VC said.

He appreciated the efforts of Dost Mohammad Yousafzai, administrative officer of the university, gardening staff and all those who remained involved in the preparation process.

Dost Mohammad said the exhibition had been organised from the resources of the university that took a week to finalise it. He said a total of 800 pots of flowers had been kept at the exhibition.—Correspondent

PRCS performance hailed

PESHAWAR, Nov 19: The head of delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) for Pakistan, Ms Karen Bjornestad visited Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Monday to have an overview of the ongoing operation carried out by the branch.

She was received by secretary PRCS Syed Ali Hassan. Head of field office KP Philip Hayes was also present on the occasion, according to a press release.

Ms Karen Bjornestad was briefed about the ongoing humanitarian activities carried out by the PRCS provincial branch. She said PRCS KP had performed excellent job compared to other provincial branches of the PRCS.

To a query, she said IFRC would play its part in sustainability of the district branches of the organisation. She also emphasised on the importance of exit strategy before initiating any programme. Syed Ali Hassan presented souvenir to Ms Bjornestad in recognition of her services.—Bureau Report

Release of students demanded

PESHAWAR, Nov 19: Students of all tribal agencies have appealed to Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Barrister Masood Kausar and political agent Khyber Agency to immediately release the arrested students and stop further arrests.

The demands were made during a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Soori Road near the press club on Monday. Holding banners and placards inscribed with different slogans in favour of their demands, the protesters also shouted slogans against the political administration of Khyber Agency.

The protesters led by Haroon Luqman, central president of Fata Students Federation (FSF), general secretary Gul Satar Siddiqui and Khan Bahadr told reporters during the current month the police had started harassing the tribesmen on different pretexts and many of them had been taken into custody.

They demanded early release of their colleague Maseet Afridi, president of FSF, Bara tehsil, otherwise they would stage protest demonstration in front of the office of the political agent of Khyber Agency.—Bureau Report

Tight security in Karak

KARAK, Nov 19: Karak police have devised a security plan under which patrolling by mobile and riders’ squads has been increased in the district during Muharram. Sources said here on Monday that on the directives of DPO Sajjad Khan, special blockades have been made on the entry and exit points leading to tribal areas, besides thorough checking of vehicles.

Checking of people and vehicles entering Karak from Kohat and Hangu districts is also being carried out to stop entry of anti-social elements into the district.

The vacations of all police officials have been cancelled during Muharram and policemen have been deputed in plainclothes on all important public places and hotels to avert any untoward incident.

Special checking of Afghan refugees is also being made at their entry into the city.

The police have appealed to masses to have a close watch on suspected people in their surroundings.—Correspondent

Policemen asked to be vigilant

LAKKI MARWAT, Nov 19: District Police Officer Mohammad Idrees Khan paid a visit to the entry and exist points of Lakki city on Monday to check security arrangements for 10th of Muharram.

SDPO Lakki Bashar Khan, SHO Ismail Khan and ASI Lakki city Abdul Munim Khan also accompanied him. The district police chief also went to the nakabandi points established in and around the routes of mourners’ processions.

He met the personnel of police deployed there and directed them to be vigilant and perform their professional obligation with the spirit of maintaining complete peace during Muharram and protecting lives of innocent people.

Mr Idrees issued instructions to subordinate officials to tighten security in the urban locality and ensure checking of suspected people and vehicles entering the limits of Lakki city. He directed that all out resources should be put in place to maintain peace and religious harmony during the month.—Correspondent
