Old enmity claims life

MARDAN, Oct 20: A man was killed over an old enmity at New Bus Stand on Saturday.

Policemen, present on the occasion, arrested the alleged killer and recovered a pistol from his possession. Police said that Umar Bacha opened firing on Abdul Qadir, resident of Sangao Katlang area, critically injuring him. The injured man died on the way to hospital.

Muqadam Khan, in-charge of police post in the new bus stand, arrested the assailant on the spot, they added. —Correspondent

Truck kills student

KOHAT, Oct 20: A student of fifth class was killed when a speeding truck hit her on Kohat bypass road on Saturday.

The student, Ilma Mahnoor, was crossing the road when the truck hit her. She succumbed to her injuries when she was being taken to a hospital.

The truck was stopped at Hangu post by police and the driver was taken into custody. —Correspondent

PHC acting chief justice

PESHAWAR, Oct 20: The senior puisne judge of Peshawar High Court, Justice Miftauddin Khan, on Saturday took oath as acting chief justice of the court.

He will function as acting chief justice in the absence of Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan, who has gone to Saudi Arabia to perform Haj.

The second senior puisne judge Justice Mian Fasihul Mulk administered oath to Justice Miftauddin Khan. The oath taking ceremony was attended by other judges, members of subordinate judiciary and advocates. —Bureau Report

Food items distributed

GHALANAI, Oct 20: Food packages were distributed among 200 militancy-affected families of Khewezai and Baizai areas at Bhai Dag in Mohmand Agency on Saturday.

Officials said that food packages, including flour, Ghee, salt, pulses, rice and other food items, were provided by the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent Society.

Lt-Col Khawar Saeed, Assistant Political Agent Rasool Khan, Tehsildar Nawab Khan, Tehsildar Mohammad Riaz, heads of peace committees and tribesmen were present on the occasion. —Correspondent

Entry test

PESHAWAR, Oct 20: The entry test for getting admission in master degree programme at University of Peshawar will be held on Sunday (today) under the National Testing Service, Pakistan.

According to a press release, five examination centres have been set up for the purpose at the university.  The students would take test in two separate sessions at the centres set up at University Public School, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural University Peshawar, ICMS College Phase-5 Hayatabad Peshawar, Khyber Science College opposite BISE Peshawar and Brains Degree College Phase-3 Chowk.

The first session would start at 10am and second to commence from 2pm onwards. Students should reach their assigned test centres one hour prior to the given time and avoid bringing any electronic devices with them, the release said. —Bureau Report

Release of men sought

PESHAWAR, Oct 20: Najma, a resident of Bara Bandai in Swat, has appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan to help recover her husband and father-in-law, who have been missing since 2009.

Following a protest demonstration outside Peshawar Press Club on Saturday, the women said that security forces had picked her husband Anwar Ali and father-in-law Khaista Bacha in 2009 on basis of suspicion but they were not released so far.

Accompanied by her other relatives and children, she said that her family was being faced with many problems and had no permanent source of income.

“We have been visiting offices of police and security offices but no one is ready to give us any kind of information about missing relatives,” she said. She claimed that her husband and father-in-law had no association with any proscribed organisation. She said that no case against them had been registered.

She appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and PHC Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan to extend support to her family and help recover both the men. —Bureau Report

Murder of lawyer condemned

PESHAWAR, Oct 20: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council on Saturday condemned the killing of senior lawyer Shakir Ali Rizwi in Lahore a day earlier and demanded of the government to arrest his killers and award them exemplary punishment.

According to a press release, Quran Khwani was held at the office of the bar council for the departed soul. The participants prayed to almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and provide courage to the bereaved family to bear the loss.

The bar council asked all bar associations in the province to hold condolence meetings in memory of the deceased and condemn wave of sectarianism and terrorism in the country. —Bureau Report

Football tournament

MARDAN, Oct 20: The Mardan district won the final of football tournament by defeating Kohat district in a thrilling match. The two teams scored one goal each and the match ended in a tie.

The match was decided by penalty kicks. The Mardan team scored all the five penalty kicks and won the match. The final was played at Younas Stadium Mardan.

Mardan Commissioner Mohammad Adil Khan was chief guest on the occasion. He gave away trophies to winner team and the players, who performed well in the tournament.

Right to Play, an international humanitarian organisation, organised the sports event titled ‘Inter-District Peace Football Tournament’ wherein 12 teams from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa participated. —Correspondent
