Land disputes claim two lives

UPPER DIR, Oct 12: Two persons were killed and a woman was injured in two incidents here on Friday.

Shahikot and Dir police said a land dispute was running between two groups in Gulibagh area of Brawal tehsil near Pak-Afghan border. Some unknown armed persons on Thursday night opened fire on Gulzada, resident of Sunai Darra Brawal, killing him on the spot.

Another incident, which took place in Chukyatan area, Sher Alam opened fire on Mohammad Karim, killing him on the spot. They had a land dispute. The victim’s mother was also seriously injured. She was shifted to Peshawar in critical condition. —Correspondent

Disaster management

LANDI KOTAL, Oct 12: A five-day training session organised by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society for the newly-recruited staff of its agency disaster response team of Mohmand Agency concluded here on Friday.

Staff and volunteers were imparted skills on how to better respond to and mitigate the sufferings of people in natural and man-made disasters, according to a press release.

The agency disaster response team for Bajaur Agency had already been established in August 2012.

Shehryar Khan, disaster management manager PRCS Fata, said, “The training is the first big step towards branch development. We have planned more training for other agencies as well. Such trainings will help us respond effectively in natural, man-made disasters or emergencies.”

Meanwhile, the Tribal Areas Electric Supply Company continued its campaign against illegal connections and defaulters in Fata. —Correspondent

Revenue official terminated

MANSEHRA, Oct 12: District Coordination Officer Dr Amber Ali Khan has terminated a revenue official from service for failing to complete record (jumabandi) of sale and purchase of the land in his patwar circle for last many months.

The DCO, according to official sources, terminated Mohammad Liaqat on the completion of an inquiry which revealed that he deceived the government despite many warnings earlier.

The district officer revenue (DOR) Fareedon Khan had suspended Mr Liaqat after the latter didn’t comply with his order and falsely reported that he had completed record.

On suspension, Mr Liaqat moved the DCO complaining about the DOR. After which, the DCO constituted an inquiry team which in its report stated that the record for the last many months was not maintained. —Correspondent

Evaluation of uplift projects

PESHAWAR, Oct 12: Governor Barrister Masood Kausar has appreciated internal mechanism for monitoring and evaluation of progress on developmental schemes; quality of work and efficient utilisation of resources in Fata He called for timely release of allocations during the current year too not only to maintain the tempo of achievements but also further accelerate the pace of progress.

He was presiding over the final review meeting of the Annual Development Programme 2011-12 and monitoring and evaluation report at Governor House on Friday. He said with enhanced allocations and strengthening of administrative arrangements at the agency level, the role and working of political agents had become more important in ensuring well-being of people. The governor was informed that 265 existing and 446 ongoing projects were monitored and evaluated on the site. —Bureau Report

Ex-minister to vie for PTI slot

PESHAWAR, Oct 12: Some provincial leaders of PTI have nominated former provincial minister Pervez Khattak as candidate for the slot of provincial president of the party.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Friday, a group of PTI led by former provincial minister Pervez Khattak said rulers were busy accumulating wealth and commissions but they were least bothered to pay attention towards the problems of the public.

Yaseen Khalil, Mehmood Jan, Zahid Hussain Mohmand, Dr Seraj and activists from different districts were also present.  He claimed the PTI was the only political force to rid the people of corrupt rulers. He said the inherited politics would be replaced by ‘honest and devoted leaders’. —Bureau Report

Intra-party elections

PESHAWAR, Oct 12: A group of PPP activists of Peshawar chapter has rejected the nomination of party leaders as office-bearers and demanded of the party leadership to dissolve the provincial cabinet and hold intra-party elections.

Addressing a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Friday, PPP activist Haji Mohammad Anwar Safi said the workers had reservations over nomination of party provincial and city level cabinet members. Flanked by some annoyed workers, he said PPP was the only party nurturing democratic norms and following constitutional way in any decision, but the formation of provincial and city cabinets by selection was not acceptable to the workers. —Bureau Report
