ISLAMABAD, Sept 28: A third-year student was stabbed to death and another injured during a scuffle with a group of youth in a passenger bus at Faizabad on Friday, police said.

The incident led to a tug of war among four police stations, including one in Rawalpindi, over the issue of jurisdiction, adding to the agony of the victim’s family and friends.

For about five hours, the victim’s family and friends along with the police kept shifting the body from one hospital to the other in the twin cities.

At one stage, the station house officer of Industrial Area allegedly produced fake eyewitnesses to declare that the incident had taken place in the limits of the Aabpara police. The supervisory officers of the City and Industrial Area circles in the evening directed their subordinates to complete all the legal formalities without further delay and hand over the body to the heirs.

Later, the Aabpara police registered the murder case after the superintendent of the Industrial Area police refused to acknowledge that the student was murdered in its jurisdiction.

At around 1pm, four students from a college boarded the passenger bus for Karal. Shortly afterward, they engaged in a scuffle with a group of young men during which the 19-year-old student, Waseem Ahmed, was stabbed in the chest.

When the student fell on the seat and started bleeding, the dagger-wielding man tried to attack him again. However, Umair Aftab, another student, grabbed the weapon but received wound to his hand.

The attackers escaped when the bus stopped near the Faizabad flyover. The injured was taken to Holy Family Hospital and then to Benazir Bhutto Hospital in a taxi by his friends where he was pronounced dead.

The Shahzad Town, Industrial Area, Aabpara police and the Sadiqabad police reached the hospital where they engaged in the jurisdiction issue.

However, the Rawalpindi police left the hospital after establishing that the incident had taken place in Islamabad. Later, the body was shifted to Pims but the issue remained unsolved till the evening.

The victim’s colleagues - Omair Aftab, Anjum and Bilal — told Dawn near the crime scene that they were attacked shortly after they boarded the bus.

They said they recognised two of the attackers.
