KARACHI, Sept 25: More than half a dozen armed robbers on Tuesday struck another bank, this time on University Road, in the city just a day after Rs2 million had been taken away from a bank branch in SITE, police said.

The police added that the robbers took away around Rs600,000 along with some cellphones of clients and staff and weapons they had snatched from two guards posted at the Al-Hilal Society Branch of Bank Al-Habib in this month’s third bank heist in the city.

In the two robberies on the consecutive days, the robbers didn’t go to the strong room and collected the money from the cash counter at gunpoint, said a senior police officer. Also, they did not ask the bank staff for digital video recording system, he noted.

It was around 12:15pm when eight men arrived on motorcycles and in a hi-roof van at the branch, said an official at the New Town police station. He added some of them entered the branch, relieved the two guards of a repeater rifle and a TT pistol at gunpoint and moved to the cash counter.

“They collected around Rs600,000 and deprived the staff and clients of their cellphones and fled with their waiting accomplices,” said SP Gulshan Division Asad Raza.

An FIR (467/2012) was later registered against eight suspects on a complaint of bank manager at the New Town police station under Section 395 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The SP said they didn’t ask for the DVR from the bank staff.

The police later obtained footage from the CCTV that would prove helpful in tracing the robbers, he said.
