GUJAR KHAN, Sept 25: Plunderers had a field day, looting 101 tolas of gold ornaments, hefty cash and several cellphones from the residents of Gujar Khan tehsil on Monday night.
A gang of seven armed men barged into the house of Khurram Sultan in Sukhu town of PS Mandra and held a six-month child hostage at gun point. They confined the householders to a room and looted 96 tolas of gold ornaments worth over Rs10 million, along with Rs 500,000 cash and a licensed 12 bore shot gun.
Similarly, four armed men entered the house of Pervez in the village Daryala Saigon of Gujar Khan police station, and made off with five tolas of gold ornaments, Rs80,000 cash, and six cellphones.
In another incident, Wadi Hussain, a merchant belonging to Kauntrila was on his way home at around 8:30 pm, when two armed motorcyclists intercepted him at Sasral-Kauntrila road and robbed him of Rs35,000.
In a similar incident, Nazaqat Hussain a proprietor of a PCO in Gujar Khan was intercepted near his village, Guliana, on Sunday and forced to surrender Rs35,000, seven cell phones and calling cards worth Rs7,000.
The alarming increase in robberies has aggravated the sense of insecurity among the residents, who have urged the IG Punjab to take notice of the surge in crime.
