KARACHI, Sept 17: A leader of Jamaat-i-Islami and former Liaquatabad Town Nazim was gunned down along with his associate in North Nazimabad on Monday night.

Police said the incident took place near KDA Chowrangi when assailants riding a motorcycle fired multiple gunshots at Dr Pervaiz Mehmood’s car.

His associate, identified as Saleemullah, died on the spot while Dr Mehmood died of his injuries during treatment in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Gulberg Division SP Latif Siddiqui said the JI leader was attacked near KDA Chowrangi. “Two men on a motorcycle targeted the car in which Dr Mehmood, along with his associate, was travelling.”

A spokesman for the JI confirmed the death of Dr Pervaiz Mehmood.

The former town Nazim was in the headlines when he proved instrumental in arranging a meeting between former home minister of Sindh, Zulfikar Mirza, and incarcerated Chairman of the Muhajir Qaumi Movement, Afaq Ahmed.

Despite being under threat, Dr Mehmood used to freely move about in the city without any personal or police guards.

A large number of the Jamaat leader’s friends and workers of his party reached Abbasi Shaheed Hospital after word spread about the shooting.

THREE BODIES FOUND: At least three bodies of young men were found from different places in the old city area on Monday night.

Police said the victims, who could not be identified, were probably residents of Lyari.

Two bodies stuffed in gunny bags were found from separate places in the Garden area. Both the victims had been subjected to torture and bore multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Another tortured and bullet-riddled body was found from the remits of the Nabi Buksh police station.
