Two children die of measles

MINGORA, Sept 11: Two children died while several others were hospitalised due to outbreak of measles in Mataltan area of Kalam the other day.

Local residents said two girl children, one of them identified as daughter of Qayyum, died due to outbreak of measles in Mataltan area. Dozens of other children were also hospitalised, they said. The people of the area have demanded the health authorities to send medical teams to the area to cope with the situation.

Meanwhile, DCO Swat Kamran Rehman took notice of the situation and ordered the health authorities to send medical teams to save children from the deadly disease.

EDO health Dr Khurshid Ali told Dawn soon after the reports of the outbreak of the disease they had sent a three-member team led by district superintendent of EPI Dr Haroonur Rashid to the affected area. —Correspondent

Lachi to have grid station

KOHAT, Sept 11: Minister for Housing Amjid Afridi has said work on the Lachi tehsil grid station will start soon to rid the people of problem of low voltage.

Addressing a ceremony on the occasion of inaugurating a gymnasium and badminton hall in Lachi on Tuesday, he announced that 2,000 meters of gas pipeline and meters would be installed in the area to provide the people with gas facility.

He said he was not making false promises like other political leaders, adding funds had been approved for the projects from the fund of Senator and State Minister for Trade Abbas Afridi. —Correspondent

Man killed for ‘honour’

BUNER, Sept 11: A man was killed allegedly over an honour-related incident in Totalai area on Tuesday.

The police quoted father of the victim as saying four accused of the same village gunned down his son outside his house and then escaped from the scene. The motive behind the incident was stated to be an honour-related issue.

The Totalai police station registered case and started investigation.

Meanwhile, a man was killed and eight others were injured when two families clashed over a dispute on the ownership of a hilltop in the Bar Gokand village. The victim was identified as Raidullah Khan, son of Dost Mohammad Khan. Police said four people from each side were injured in the clash. —Correspondent

Schedule for ability tests

PESHAWAR, Sept 11: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Service Commission has scheduled ability test for different posts.

The ability test for one male instructor/lecturer in statistics/business mathematics (BS-17) will be conducted on September 24. For three female lecturers of statistics (BS-17) in higher education department, the test will be held on September 25, and for one female lecturer of psychology (BS-17) in higher education department the test will be on September 26, respectively.

Similarly, for three assistant directors (geologist) (BS-17) in industries, commerce, mineral development/labour and technical education department, the test will be on September 27 and for one assistant director (BS-17) in science and technology and IT department on September 28, respectively.

It was stated that call letters had been issued to the candidates. The candidates who have not received their call letters may contact the commission office on phone numbers 091-9213563, 9212897 and 9214131. —Bureau Report

ANP leader ‘grabbing’ land

PESHAWAR, Sept 11: A landowner, Arbab Saboor of Naqai Daudzai area, has accused the local police of supporting his opponents, and demanded of the high ups to ensure protection to his life.

Speaking at press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday he alleged the police were supporting the land grabbers and politically influential people and were conducting illegal raids at the houses of those having no influence in the government.

“My family had developed some differences with Tajuddin, former provincial general secretary of the ANP, in which the local mediators brought us in an agreement in September 2009 but he (Tajuddin and his brother Mumtaz, former nazim Town-II) violated the agreement and attacked my hujra causing huge losses,” he said.

He asked the ANP leadership to stop supporting his rival, Tajuddin, who was allegedly involved in killing of several innocent people and was using party affiliation in his personal gains. —Bureau Report

Teenager electrocuted

TIMERGARA, Sept 11: An 18-year-old youth was electrocuted when he was hit by an 11,000kv power line, residents told Dawn.

They said the victim identified as Maaz Khan, son of Amir Ali, resident of Bagh Kandai Adenzai, was working on the roof of a house at Shawa Adenzai when he touched the line through a metal bar. He died on the spot.

Meanwhile, one Jehan Bakht Bacha died due to cardiac failure during his son’s wedding ceremony at Ramyal Chakdara.

Sources said the deceased was about to leave with the wedding procession of his son to the bride’s house in Abuha Swat that he suffered the heart attack. —Correspondent

Two brothers killed on road

MINGORA, Sept 11: Two brothers identified as Nek Zada and Gul Zada were killed while another man was injured, when the truck they were travelling in, plunged into a deep ravine in Chamtali area of Khwazakhela on Tuesday.

The truck (2337) was going to Shangla from Mingora when it fell into a deep ravine at Chamtali. As a result both the brothers were killed on the spot while the driver Itbar Gul was injured. The police and local residents retrieved the bodies and dispatched them to their village. They were laid to rest in their ancestral graveyard in Sara Chena, Charbagh. —Correspondent

Pakistan Student Congress

SWABI, Sept 11: The ‘Pakistan Student Congress’ was concluded here at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology on Tuesday.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), GIK Institute, had organised the congress. Dr Shaukat Hameed Khan, Executive Director of Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan, was chief guest in the prize distribution ceremony.

The event comprised of seminars, workshops, competitions and social contests. Approximately 180 participants, including girls of different universities/institutions from all over country participated in the congress.

Dr Shaukat Hameed, who founded the laser programme in Pakistan and retired as chief scientist in 2005 from Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, said: “The event was mutually beneficial and helpful for all the participants. “Such gatherings always proved fruitful for students as they could discuss new scientific developments and major technological changes occurring in the world.” —Correspondent
