Two killed in Mansehra

MANSEHRA, Sept 8: Lightning struck a man in Giabarpur area, while a road accident on Karakuram Highway claimed life of a person here on Saturday.

The victim, Mohammad Zan, was in the fields for some work early in the morning when he was hit by lightning. He died instantly.

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man, Umer Yar, was killed when a passenger wagon knocked him down on Karakoram Highway in Shinkiari on Saturday. The local people were taking him to civil hospital Shinkiari but he died on the way. Shinkiari police station registered the case.

The driver escaped the area.—Correspondent

Woman shot dead

CHARSADDA, Sept 8: A woman of Mardan, who allegedly eloped with a man of Matta Mughulkhel, Charsadda and tied the knot against the wish of her family, was gunned down by her relatives here on Friday.

According to police four brothers, hailing from Mardan, sneaked into the house of her husband in Matta Mukhulkhel and opened fire on her.

As a result she was killed on the spot. The accused managed to escape after the incident. The police lodged FIR against the accused and started investigation.—Correspondent  

Tribes seek compensation

KOHAT, Sept 8: The Muttahida Qabail Party (MQP) has warned the internally displaced tribesmen will not return to their areas unless they are paid Rs3 million for each damaged house besides provision of basic necessities.

The IDPs from Orakzai Agency held a jirga at Malik Saad Shaheed Park here on Saturday where they discussed problems and their solutions.

MQP chairman Habib Noor Orakzai and secretary general Rafiullah alias Bhutto said they would go back to their areas only when the government provided health, education, road, water facilities, security and safety of their lives.

They also demanded separate province for nearly 40 million population of the tribal region. They condemned the operations in Waziristan and drone attacks which were claiming lives of innocent people. They decided to devise future strategy after meeting the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the political agents.—Correspondent

Eight held with arms

PESHAWAR, Sept 8: Police arrested several suspected persons, including some proclaimed offenders, during raids in different localities of Badbher in suburbs of Peshawar on Saturday.

An official source of the rural circle said raids had been conducted in the areas of Mashokhel, Musazai and Bazidkhel. At least eight suspected persons were arrested and arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession. The official said that police had conducted targeted raids following confirmed information about presence of criminals and suspected persons. He added that these people were under interrogation. He said that the seized weapons included four Kalashnikovs and as many pistols.

The police, he said had tightened security at all the entry points and were checking the movement of suspected persons, especially in the wake of bomb blasts at Mattani and University Town Peshawar a few days ago.—Bureau Report

Helpers’ team for Hajis selected

PESHAWAR, Sept 8: Thirteen police personnel of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been selected for the contingent of ‘muaveneen-e-Hujjaj’ (helpers of pilgrims) for this year’s Haj performance in Saudi Arabia.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has issued no objection certificate to the federal government on the selection of these personnel under the arrangements of the ministry of religious affairs.

According to a list issued from home and tribal affairs department here on Saturday the nominees include Sajjad Mohammad, sub-inspector from Kohistan, Fazal Wahab, SF inspector, Khalidur Rehman, head constable from Malakand region and M Nafees, head constable from PTC Hangu.

Constables Salekheen, Zahid Hussain Asmatullah Khan, Attaullah Khan, Akhtar Zaman, Ziaullah Rasheed, Ayaz Ali Khan and Amjad Ali working at various places across the province in the police department area also included in the list.—Bureau Report

‘Murderer’ arrested

MANSEHRA, Sept 8: The police claimed to have arrested a teenager who allegedly killed his minor niece after sexually assaulting her in Behali area on Friday.

“A teenaged boy who killed his seven-year-old niece after assaulting her has been arrested,” said Habibullah Khan, DSP investigation, while speaking at a press conference here on Saturday. The DSP, who played an important role in tracing the blind murder, told reporters that the boy, 17, after killing his niece, dumped her body in a deserted well at her home.

“The accused confessed to his crime and revealed that he killed the girl as the victim wanted to tell the family about her molestation,” said Mr Khan. He said that the accused had also joined the family members in the search for the victim after throwing the body in the well.—Correspondent

SHOs warned against leniency

LAKKI MARWAT, Sept 8: Regional Police Officer, Bannu, Nisar Ahmad Tanoli chaired a high-level meeting here at the district police office on Saturday to review law and order situation and crime ratio in the district.

He warned the station house officers of strict disciplinary action for showing poor performance. “Improve your performance by cracking down on criminals’ gangs and anti-social elements or get ready for drastic departmental action,” he told them.

DPO Idrees Khan, SDPO Lakki Bashar Khan, SDPO Naurang Sanaullah Khan, station house officers and police investigators attended the meeting. The regional police officer directed district police force to launch action against car lifters, drug traffickers and gamblers and cleanse the district of all kinds of crimes and vices.

“It is the prime responsibility of police force to protect the lives and properties of people and destroy the evils at all costs,” he maintained.—Correspondent

Anti-polio drive

CHARSADDA, Sept 8: A meeting held at DCO office on Saturday reviewed the measures for anti-polio drive scheduled to start from Monday.

The meeting chaired by DCO Ajmal Khan was also attended by EDO health Dr Fazal Akbar, Unicef official Yasar Farukh, EPI coordinator Dr Farhad and others.

The Unicef official appealed to the parents to apply anti-polio drops to their children to protect them from the deadly poliovirus. He said 711 teams had been made under the 137 area supervisors to apply vaccines to 262,000 children. To make the campaign further effective three committees headed by tehsildars have been set up in Charsadda, Tangi and Shabqadr tehsils, he added.

The DCO directed all EDOs and police to cooperate with polio teams in making the drive a success. He expressed satisfaction that number of refusal cases was less in Charsadda compared to other districts.—Correspondent
