Two shot dead in clash

KOHAT, Aug 31: Two people were killed and three injured in a gun battle between two armed groups in Muhammad Khwaja area of Hangu on Friday.

The two groups opened fire at each other soon after Friday prayers near the Jamia Masjid in Muhammad Khawaja area.

In the crossfire Mohammad Hilal and Inayat Shah were killed while Mohammad Ishaq, Mohammad Shoeb, Mohammad Hassan and Danish were injured.

The Saddar police registered cross FIR against the accused and arrested one of them identified as Anwar Iqbal. Others managed to escape. —Correspondent

Nine booked for power theft

PESHAWAR, Aug 31: Peshawar Electric Supply Company on Friday registered cases against nine shopkeepers for using illegal power supply in Fatu Abdur Rahima area of Peshawar.

During a visit to the area the Pesco chief Brig (retd) Tariq Sadozai also suspended three officials, including area lineman Mohammad Hussain of Gulozo village, Mohammad Sadiq of Wadpaga and meter reader Ijaz for involvement in illegal activities.

Talking to media persons the sub-divisional officer of Lala sub-division Aminullah Dawar said several domestic connections had also been disconnected at Mohammadzai village and the campaign would continue against the power theft. —Bureau Report

Students hold demo

PESHAWAR, Aug 31: Students of various departments of Peshawar University on Friday held a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road against the administration for allegedly using delaying tactics to issue roll number slips to them for appearing in the master’s examination.

They were holding banners and placards inscribed with demands for provision of roll number slips on time. The protesters led by the activists of Islami Jamiat Talba told reporters the administration failed to issue roll number slips on time, creating difficulties for them.

They said the administration had imposed extra fine on them which was to be paid before getting the roll number slips.

They said as the examination was scheduled to start in the first week of September they should be issued roll numbers on urgent basis. They said many poor students had applied for concession but the administration did not accommodate them. —Bureau Report

Model complaint office set up

PESHAWAR, Aug 31: Peshawar Electric Supply Company with the help of USAID on Friday established a model compliant office to redress public complaints.

Pesco Chief Executive Brig (retd)Tariq Sadozai inspected the model complaint office. He was accompanied by chief engineer planning Pesco Sajjad Ahmad.

XEN Peshawar city Javed Hayat along and representatives of USAID briefed the chief executive Pesco about the arrangements made for the redressal of consumer complaints in the model complaint office. The Pesco chief executive appreciated the style and facilities available in the complaint office and instructed to further improve the centre.

He was told that the USAID provided latest technique and facilities in this regard for quick removal of public complaints. He said if the model complaint office gave good results more such centres would be established. —Bureau Report  

Modern education for tribesmen

PESHAWAR, Aug 31: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar said on Friday that tribal people should be provided scientific and advanced knowledge to enable them to face the challenges of modern world.

This he said at a meeting with a delegation of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, Miramshah chapter, led by Maulana Abdul Ghafoor at Governor House on Friday.

The delegation discussed law and order situation and other problems in the region. The governor listened to their complaints and assured them of full cooperation.

Mr Kausar said tribal people were patriotic and loyal to their homeland and should be given the same basic rights as any other nation possessed. He said, ‘we should try our best to establish and maintain peace in Fata to squeeze the space for elements destabilising the region. —Bureau Report  

Workers’ convention   CHITRAL, Aug 31: JUI-F will hold a workers’ convention at the polo ground here on September 23, addressed by Maulana Fazlur Rehman and other leaders.

Addressing a press conference, the party’s district president and former MPA Maulana Abdur Rahman said preparations to make the event a success had been started.

He claimed a good number of leaders and workers of other political parties would join the party on this occasion.

Meanwhile, the residents of Mori Lusht village of Koh union council demanded action against the engineers of public health engineering department as their negligence led to drowning of two boys in the water tank of the village water supply scheme.

In a statement, they said Zahoor Khan, 12, and Sharif ud Din, 13, fell into the water pond because the roof of the tank was not constructed by the department. —Correspondent

Suspicious injections banned

KOHAT, Aug 31: The anti-corruption staff banned the sale of ten types of suspicious injections and seized the expired medicines from two stores during raids on Friday.

The assistant director of anti-corruption department, Kohat division, Hashmat Ali Zaidi accompanied by the circle officer Naseer Khan and other staff members checked the medicines at various drug stores in the Bazaar-i-Mustafa and several markets.

They collected samples of ten suspicious injections and sent them to laboratory for checking. They also banned their sale till the arrival of the report.

Later, the staff seized expired medicines from two stores -- Hussain Medicos and Shinwari Medicos in Municipal Plaza and registered case against them under section 39 of the drugs act. —Correspondent

Transfer of official demanded

PESHAWAR, Aug 31: The employees of all the population welfare centres of Buner district have accused the district officer of forcing them to pay extortion money. They warned of shutting the centres if action was not taken against him.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Friday Fauzia Durrani and Maqbool Jahan said district officer Habib-ur-Rehman had been forcing them to pay extortion money every month and those declined to do so were transferred from their centres.

“I belong to Mardan and have spent 11 years in Buner but I was transferred to Upper Dir while Maqbool Jahan belonging to Buner was transferred to Mardan for the only reason we did not accept the illegal demands of our district officer,” said Ms Durrani.

She alleged the district officer had support of the Buner district president of PPP and population welfare minister. —Bureau Report
