Enmity claims two lives

KOHAT, Aug 30: An old enmity claimed lives of two tribesmen in Khajuri area on Thursday.

Mohammad Kareem told Bilitang police he was working in the fields with his brother, Hayat Kareem, and cousin, Rasool Mohammad, in Khajuri Dhok when their rivals Younis and Akhtar Gul opened indiscriminate fire on them.

Mohammad Kareem said his brother and cousin died on the spot while he miraculously escaped. The culprits managed to escape from the scene.

Meanwhile, the supplementary examinations of the tenth class of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Kohat, will commence from September 16, according to a press release issued on Thursday.

The controller of examinations said roll number slips had been issued to students. —Correspondent

JI plans rally on Sept 6

PESHAWAR, Aug 30: Jamaat-i-Islami will hold a mass demonstration at Nowshera on September 6 against rampant corruption, price hike, lawlessness and unemployment.

While speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Thursday, JI’s Nowshera district amir Merajuddin Khan said the elected representatives belonging to ANP and PPP had distributed foreign aid and funds in their respective constituencies instead of extending benefits to people in the entire district.

He further said most of areas faced excessive power outages while the industrial units had also stopped working in the district.

Flanked by JI provincial leaders and activists, he said the rally will be addressed by JI central amir Munawar Hassan, central naib amir Sirajul Haq, Prof Mohammad Ibrahim and other provincial leaders. —Bureau Report

Three Pesco workers suspended

KOHAT, Aug 30: Pesco has suspended three officials on charges of connivance with power thieves of a cloth market in Kohat city.

Sources told Dawn on Thursday two meter readers and one inspector had provided alternative connection to Gilani Cloth Market taking bribe in return.

They had done so on the request of the owners of the shops to keep their business running during loadshedding.

The Pesco recovery team discovered the illegal connection and snapped it.

The owners of the shops staged a protest and demanded restoration of the ‘illegal’ connection.

However, after preliminary inquiry the competent authority suspended secretary general of the Wapda electric labour union of Kohat division, Fauji Badshah, an inspector and a meter reader. —Correspondent

Seven with liquor arrested

LANDI KOTAL, Aug 30: Security forces on Thursday seized liquor and arrested seven persons in Landi Kotal.

Officials said that about 130 bottles of liquor were seized and seven drug dealers were arrested during a raid on a house near Malik Nadar Khan Kalay. —Correspondent

No polio case in Torghar

MANSEHRA, Aug 30: The district coordinator for Expanded Programme for Immunisation, Torghar, Dr Diar Khan has said owing to hard work by the health department and the National Research Development Organisation (NRDO) no new case of polio has been reported in the district during the last two years.

“Following emergence of two positive cases the health department carried out special anti-polio campaigns as a result of which no new case was reported,” said Mr Diar while speaking at a press conference here on Thursday.

The country coordinator NRDO Qazi Wasiur Rehman and district coordinator Mohammad Tufail were also present.

Dr Diar said ulema and district polio teams visited the far off areas and convinced the people to administer polio drops to their children. —Correspondent

Gang of thieves busted

SWABI, Aug 30: A gang of thieves involved in stealing oil and coils from power transformers was busted by district police, said District Police Officer Abdul Rashid while addressing a press conference here on Thursday.

Mr Rashid said the SHO of the Topi city police station along with a party was on a routine patrol when they suddenly noticed three people near the Gadoon Amazai Industrial Chowk who were busy in stealing oil and coils from a transformer.

Seeing the police the thieves tried to escape but the police chased them and arrested Arsalan Khan and his son Iftikhar Khan and Gulab Din. “All of the arrested thieves belong to Charsadda,”

The DPO said, adding during interrogation they admitted to have a network in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the tribal region. —Correspondent

One dies in road accident

KHAR, Aug 30: A tribesman was killed and six others seriously wounded when a pickup truck carrying internally displaced persons fell into a deep ravine at Ghakhi area of Salarzai tehsil on Thursday.

According to officials of Bajaur Levies, a pickup truck carrying IDPs of Lakian Salarzai was going from Pashat area of Salarzai to Khar when the driver lost control over the vehicle.

As a result, it plunged into a ravine, killing one Rohullah, 43, on the spot, while six others identified as Farman, Abdullah, Shahabuddin, Nasib Rawan, Fazal Said, Saifur Rahman and Noor Mohammad were injured.

Locals took the injured to the agency headquarters hospital Khar where condition of some of them was stated to be critical.

The IDPs belonged to Lakian Batwar area where heavy fighting between TTP and the security forces is continuing. —Correspondent

Eid packages distributed

CHARSADDA, Aug 30: Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (Sparc) distributed Eid packages among families from flood affected areas in Charsadda district.

These areas included Nimorai Baba, Shahi Kulali, Dagi Faizullah, Dagi Ghulam Qadir and Spalmai.

The package included edible things, shoes and clothes for children.

Wajid Ali Shah, project manager, said the families were identified by the field team by taking their complete details and counter-verifying these.

The families mostly comprised of widows, orphans, needy and extremely poor.

Wajid Ali said the Sparc was also making efforts to increase enrollment by equipping out of school children particularly orphans, CWDs and poor by providing them basic needs like uniform, shoes, stationary, school bags. —Correspondent
