HYDERABAD, Aug 26: Two more died on Sunday after consuming spurious drinks in Tando Allahyar, raising the death toll over the past 10 days to 14.
Chandar Kulie and Shano Kulie died after drinking the poisonous liquor. They belonged to Saifal Chuttan village.
According to sources, at least five illegal distilleries in the district were producing toxic liquor which was being sold openly but the district administration was unable to take action against them.
Police raided the house of Kabutro who had died after drinking the poisonous liquor on Saturday and arrested his relative Azad Kabutro.
The arrest triggered a protest by local people, including a large number of women. They demonstrated against police and demanded his release.
Tando Allahyar-Chambar road was blocked by the protesters. They dispersed when police assured the protesters that the man would be released.
It was reported that a sister of another deceased, Fateh Khan, had died on Sunday after police raids.
Meanwhile, activists of Awami Tahreek took out a procession on Sunday in Hyderabad against sale of drugs, liquor, mainpuri and gutka.
The participants marched from Naseem Nagar Chowk to the press club, shouted slogans against the government and police for their failure to control the illegal businesses in the district.
Noor Ahmed Katiar and Altaf Rahujo of the Tehrik said police should launch a crackdown on the illegal business because these items were being sold in the market without any check. There was no ban on their sale.
Some people died after taking toxic liquor a few days ago in Hyderabad but no one bothered about it.
They said that drugs and other contraband items had taken a heavy toll and youths were suffering from the curse which must be immediately curbed.
They appealed to political activists and representatives of various non-governmental social organisations to play their role in curbing this menace.
