LAHORE, Aug 13: Police and a security concern engaged in providing trademark and copyright protection services in the country have conducted two raids and recovered a large quantity of Oxford University Press (OUP) security labels and pirated copies of science books.

Police and security concern Roving Source conducted a raid at M.K. Printing Press, Abbott Road, owned by Sheikh Adnan Javed, who is serving as assistant commissioner in Islamabad.

The raiding team confiscated around 50 sheets of 6,000 fake OUP security labels to be used on textbooks. Two workers – Shahzad Khalid and Faisal Aslam, who were present at the press at the time of the raid, were taken into custody by Qila Gujjar Singh police.

According to reports, Assistant Commissioner Sheikh Adnan Javed tried to use his influence on police to release his workers and not register an FIR but the police put the accused behind the bars. The party also conducted a raid at a die-cutting facility operating at an obscure residential house and seized around 5,000 pirated copies of New Oxford Primary Science Book 1 and 2.

The proprietor of the setup, Raza Ali, was apprehended by the Lower Mall police for further investigation. An FIR has been lodged against him.

The police have impounded the pirated material and instituted charges against the perpetrators for committing violation of the Copyright Laws of Pakistan. The OUP spokesman says such infringements of Intellectual Property Rights cause heavy losses to the publishing industry, authors, the Pakistan government, parents and pupils, who are cheated into buying substandard pirated books.
