Butcher lands behind bars

TAXILA, Aug 6: Tehsil municipal officer (TMO) Hassanabdal on Monday arrested and sent to jail a butcher for selling meat at exorbitant rates, it has been learnt.

According to details, Mehtab Ali, the accused, was allegedly found guilty of overcharging in the holy month of Ramazan in Burhan area. He had been reportedly warned as well as fined many times earlier for violating official rate list.

After receiving numerous complaints from public against him, the TMO paid a surprise visit at his shop and found him fleecing the buyers. — Correspondent

Suicide bid foiled

ATTOCK, Aug 6: An accused involved in murder and attempted murder cases tried to kill self at Fatehjang police station’s lock-up but the bid was foiled due to timely action of police guards, it has been learnt.

Police sources said the accused, Liaquat Ali, who had been arrested few days ago, tried to end his life with a sharp-edged glass.

However, the duty officials failed the attempt by immediately bringing him out of the lock-up and taking him into custody. Police also registered a case of attempted suicide against him. — Correspondent

Cellphone shop, bakery looted

RAWALPINDI, Aug 6: A mobile phone franchise was looted of Rs650,000 by six armed robbers in Satellite Town while a bakery owner was deprived of Rs100,000 by four gunmen in the Banni police area on Monday, police and victims said.

Sheikh Zakria, one of the robbery victims, said he was sitting at his office when six persons entered his office and held the staff members and customers' at gunpoint.

He told Dawn from hospital bed that he suffered bruises after being thrashed by the robbers. He said the robbers took away Rs650,000 and also snatched six mobile phones. However, they could not get anything from the two customers who had been there to change their phone SIMs.

In another similar incident, four gunmen raided "Roshan Bakery" at bustling Banni chowk and held its owner Bahauddin at gunpoint.

The gunmen snatched Rs102,000 from him and managed to escape on two motorbikes. — Staff Reporter
