RAWALPINDI, April 4: A police constable posted at the Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) office, an ex-policeman and three other persons were arrested allegedly for being members of a robbers' gang, it has been learnt.

The gang was wanted by police in connection with several house robberies. Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Yasin Farooq when contacted confirmed the arrest of Constable Mohammad Kamran who had been leading the robbery gang and another ex-police official Mohammad Azad who was a member of gang that committed several robberies in their native town of Jatli.

"The involvement of men-in-uniform in the crimes was disgraceful and worrying for the department," the SSP said.

The arrests were made by the police after the gang members struck at a house in Chuck Bahadur (outskirts of Jatli) and took away gold jewellery valuing Rs250,000 besides a pistol and a mobile phone in November last year.

Since the incident was reported to police, a hunt for the gang was launched. Police first captured Yasir Mehmood who during interrogation revealed the names of his other accomplices which led to their arrest too.

Kamran was associated with the wireless wing of Rawalpindi police whereas Azad had been dismissed from service three years back."The criminal involvement of policemen is a slap in the face of the department," a police official commented.

During preliminary investigation Kamran revealed that he resorted to robbing as a "part-time" job.
