KARACHI, April 4: An activist of the Awami National Party was gunned down in the Taiser Town area of Surjani on Wednesday, police said.

Umar Malik, 30, was sitting at a milk shop in Sector 36 of Taiser Town when gunmen riding a motorbike pulled up there and sprayed him with bullets before speeding away, said a duty officer at the Surjani Town police station.

The victim, who was a vice president of the party’s area ward, sustained three gunshot wounds in the chest and one in the head causing his instant death, the police said.

They quoted a witness as saying that one of the two riders was wearing shalwar kameez and the other trousers and shirt. Police found several spent bullet casings of a 9mm pistol from the crime-scene.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.

The police said the victim worked as a ‘munshi’ at a bus terminus and was father of three children.

Following the killing, traders pulled down shutters and tension gripped parts of Surjani Town. Subsequently, contingents of Rangers and police were deployed to prevent any untoward condition.

Police said the victim hailed from Bajaur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Body found

The trussed-up body of a young man was found stuffed in a gunny bag in Karimabad on Wednesday, police said. The gunny bag was placed near a meat market, said Azizabad SHO Haseeb Qureshi. He added that the body bore several torture marks. Also, a nylon rope was found tied around his neck, the official said.

The victim, in his mid-20s, was clad in white jeans and blue shirt.

Police shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Hospital sources said the victim apparently died of suffocation.

The body was later shifted to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

Shot dead

A 26-year-old labourer was shot dead near the Sabzi Mandi on the Superhighway, police said.

Sher Hakeem, a resident of Bismillah Market, was standing near the market when he was targeted within the remit of the Sohrab Goth police station.

Police shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

They quoted the victim’s younger brother, Wazeer Malook, as saying that he was not associated with any political or religious party.

The said they police believed the killing was a result of personal enmity.

Rangers man dies

A Rangers sepoy, who had sustained four gunshot wounds in an attack in Gulistan-i-Jauhar area a week ago, died during treatment on Wednesday, police said.

They added Mohammad Irfan, 34, was crossing a road with his wife when he was targeted. He was shifted to the PNS Shifa Hospital, where he was admitted, said a duty officer at the Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station.

Posted in Sukkur, the victim had come to the city on a holiday with his family, the police said.

An FIR (170/2012) was registered under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code against unidentified men on a complaint of the victim’s wife. He was the father of two children, the police said.
