UMERKOT, March 29: Though media have reached nook and corner of the country, the professionalism with which issues should be highlighted remains missing.

The journalists, therefore, should put in their efforts in brining to fore, problems confronting the rural population.

This and many other complains against media were debated at the concluding ceremony of a three-day workshop for journalists organised by an NGO – Health and Nutrition Development Society – Hands and an organisation working for journalists – Khama, on Thursday.

Noted writer Arbab Nek Mohammad said the issue of mother, child and reproductive health was not fully understood because of scanty knowledge among masses. It’s the responsibility of media to create awareness on such crucial issues. Another issue underplayed is the shortage of drinking and irrigation water in desert area he said reminding that women and children are at the hit of it, for being most vulnerable.

Though journalism is gaining popularity fast the professionalism with which facts should be brought forth could not be achieved, District Manager, Hands Umerkot, Bansi Malhi said.

For instance, the issue of water in Tharparkar need to be highlighted at all forums. Regarding increase in mortality rate, particularly among women of child-bearing age, he said the health of mother is important for a healthy baby but low nutrition, lack of hygienic sense and outdated practises cause mortality of mothers.

It’s the need of time that such issues are debated on media instead of delving into not-so-important issues, he said.

Regarding environmental problems, Chairman, Thar Environment and Development Media (Team), Allah Bux said journalist should take advantage of information technology and educate masses on climatic changes, its impact on health and how to tackle it.
