Three killed in Swabi

SWABI, March 26: Three people were killed in separate incidents here on Monday, said the police. In Rafiq Abad, Veran Shah, 25, shot himself dead after exchanging hot words with his brothers and other family members over a domestic issue.

In another incident, body of Nur Mohammad, a Pesco lineman, who worked in the Gohati region, was found near Charbagh. The locals informed his family about the incident. An FIR has been registered against unidentified killers in Kalu Khan police station.

In Batakara, Asif Hayat was shot dead by his opponents over an old enmity. Brother of the deceased registered FIR against their rivals.—Correspondent

Man kills wife, self

MANSEHRA, March 26: A man committed suicide after killing his wife over a petty issue at Karori area in Darband here on Monday.

According to police, Aslam Khan opened fire on his wife, killing her on the spot, and later shot himself dead.

The police said Aslam Khan, who had recently retired from army, wanted his family to settle at Karori but his wife wanted to settle in Mansehra and both exchanged harsh words, leading to the firing incident. Afzal Khan, brother of Aslam Khan, while lodging FIR with Darband police, stated the family, which had been settled in Mansehra for last many years, had come to Karori three days ago.—Correspondent

Turkey’s contribution lauded

PESHAWAR, March 26: The visiting Director of Pakistan Turkish International Cag Education Foundation, Turgut Pyuan, called on Governor Barrister Masood Kausar at Governor House on Monday. He apprised the governor of the services which their organisation was rendering for promotion of education especially in Peshawar.

Mr Puyan was also accompanied by the regional director of the foundation and the principal of the Pak-Turk International School and College Mustafa Yalmaz. Mr Puyan said the number of educational institutions in Pakistan had reached 19, and that they intended to enhance the role of their organisation.

The governor appreciated the role and contribution which the foundation was rendering for promoting education especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.—Bureau Report

Pakistani honoured

PESHAWAR, March 26: Dr Badshah Munir Bukhari, member of faculty of Urdu, Persian language and literature, University of Peshawar, is the first Pakistani to become member of the Linguistics Society of America (LSA).

Established in 1924, the LSA conducts research in all languages of the world through specialists to keep them updated. The society registers linguists throughout the world and gives six annual awards in the field of linguistics, research and publication. Dr Bukhari has also remained a fellow of World Languages Organisation (WLO). His name is also included in the world linguists list, according to a press release issued here on Monday.—Bureau Report

Grant for teachers’ body

PESHAWAR, March 26: The government has approved Rs8.5 million for Peshawar University Teachers Association (Puta). The grant was approved by Chief Minister Ameer Haidar Hoti in light of decisions taken at a meeting at CM Secretariat on Jan 20.

The meeting had approved constructing Mian Rashid Hussain conference room for academic activities in teachers community centre, providing a vehicle for activities of Puta and funds for foreign academic tours.

The CM approved Rs3 million for conference room, Rs4.5 million for the vehicle and Rs1 million as special grant for Puta.—Bureau Report

River threatens residents

TIMERGARA, March 26: Residents, including traders, of Balambat road on Monday demanded of the government and district administration to take notice of the growing water level in the river Panjkora.

Talking to reporters they said flow of water in the river had been diverted towards the city with construction of protection wall around the Balambat Bridge. They pointed out that an artificial lake had been formed, which could inundate the area as water level in it was rising.

They demanded of the district administration to immediately arrange visit of experts to the site to avoid any untoward incident in future.—Correspondent

Lawyer’s killing condemned

PESHAWAR, March 26: Governor Barrister Masood Kausar on Monday condemned killing of a lawyer Ali-ur-Rehman advocate and injuries to his son Raees Khan by unknown persons at Katlang in Mardan.

The governor expressed deep sympathies with the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.  He also wished courage to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss with patience and early recovery of the injured.

The governor directed IGP Akbar Khan Hoti to ensure early completion of investigations in the case. The IGP assured the governor that the police had already made quite a good headway in this connection and no effort was being spared to nab the culprits involved in the heinous crime.—Bureau Report

Sherpao flays govt polices

PESHAWAR, March 26: Provincial president of PPP-S MPA Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao has lambasted the ANP-led coalition government in the province for what he said its failure to resolve the issue of net hydle profit.

In a statement on Monday, he expressed anguish over the prolonged, unscheduled power suspensions. He said the delay in solution of the long-awaited hydle profit issue forced the people of the province to face outages despite the fact the province was producing surplus electricity while consuming less.

He asked for an end to the unscheduled loadshedding at the earliest.Holding the provincial and federal governments responsible for prevailing crises, Mr Sherpao said the grossly ‘flawed’ policies and corruption had ruined the country.—Bureau Report

Educational facilities in Fata

PESHAWAR, March 26: Jamiat Talba Islam, a student wing of JUI-F, has expressed concern over the lack of education facilities in the Fata and demanded of the government to take pragmatic steps for bringing Fata at par with other developed areas of the country.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Monday, JTI Fata president Qari Mohammad Umer Betani said due to lack of education facilities in the tribal region the students had the only option to take weapons in their hands instead of pen and books.

“I belong to the Frontier Region of Lakki and know well about the backwardness there but the government is least bothered to develop the hitherto neglected areas,” he claimed. He demanded of the government to stop the self-finance scheme in the institutions and reduce the ratio of fee so that all the people alike could get the education.—Bureau Report
