Two killed over land dispute

TAXILA, March 13: A man shot dead his sister-in-law and nephew over a family feud outside tehsil courts on Tuesday.

Police and family sources said Sabirul Nisa, 40, the resident of Kolian village, had a land dispute with his brother-in-law Nazeer Shah. After hearing of her case at the court of Additional Sessions Judge Hasnain Raza, she was returning with her son, Rizwan Qureshi, 24 on Faisal Shaheed Road when Nazeer Shah opened indiscriminate fire at them. Both were taken to a local hospital where they died. The accused managed to flee the scene. — Correspondent

Two die on road

MUZAFFARABAD, March 13: Two persons were killed and as many seriously injured in two different road accidents near here on Tuesday, police said.

Forest guard Raja Younas died on the spot when his motorbike rammed into a mini-truck near Danna village, to the south of Muzaffarabad, while his brother-in-law was seriously injured and referred to a hospital in Islamabad.

In another accident, Abdul Hameed was killed when a jeep plying between Sarriyan and Chanchal village to the northwest of Muzaffarabad, plunged into a gorge. Jeep driver, Khalid, was critically wounded. — Staff Correspondent

Thieves strike at three places

ATTOCK, March 13: Thieves struck at three places in the district on Tuesday. Police sources said a local shopkeeper, Ishfaq Ahmed reported to city police that some thieves took away Rs30,000, sugar, ghee and other grocery items from his shop on Hamam Road after breaking the locks.

In another incident, Mohammad Shafique of Sagrai village informed Jand police that some unknown persons made off with an engine worth Rs40,000 from the tube well installed on his fields. Similarly, outlaws lifted 50kv transformer from the power supply line at Malikmala village of Hazro Police station. — Correspondent

Three murderers nabbed

ATTOCK, March 13: Three persons were arrested for allegedly killing a young man over a marriage dispute in Dhoke Nattain village on Tuesday.

Fatehjang police said Kala Khan was killed in a road accident on Feb 18, while his friend Mohammad Khaqan sustained injuries and went into coma.

As Mr Khaqan regained consciousness, he revealed that a village fellow Mohammad Safdar along with his two friends Mohammad Riasat and Mohammad Ayub hit their motorcycle with his pickup injuring them seriously. Afterwards, Mohammad Safdar attacked Kala Khan with an axe killing him on the spot.

On this disclosure, Fatehjang police registered a murder case and arrested all the three accused. During interrogation, it was revealed that the deceased married niece of Mohammad Safdar against the will of the family. At this the accused murdered him. —Correspondent

Man looted

TAXILA, March 13: Three masked persons equipped with weapons deprived the owner of a filling station of Rs2.50 million. Police sources said on Tuesday that Amir Aftab, the owner of a filling station along with his manager Shiekh Mohammad Rizwan was carrying cash to a local bank in his vehicle when three persons riding a car (bearing number K-5862) intercepted him and at gunpoint, snatched cash bag and fled the scene. The outlaws beat the manager on showing resistance. Taxila police registered a case and started further investigation. — Correspondent

Students being assisted

ISLAMABAD, March 13: Pakistan Baitul Mal (PBM) has been financially supporting more than 200 poor, deserving and orphan students doing their master degrees at National University of Modern Languages (Numl).

PBM provides Rs60,000 annually to each of 225 students doing masters at the university. The welfare organisation has initiated the scheme in order to help out students from the downtrodden and marginalised sections of the country especially those who have been the victims of bomb blasts, said Managing Director PBM Zamarud Khan on Tuesday during a meeting with Numl officials who, in response, assured him that they would standby the PBM in all its welfare projects. — Staff Reporter

Award for journalists

ISLAMABAD, March 13: Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ross Hynes announced Canadian award for Pakistani journalists covering the issues relating to public interest during his visit to National Press Club on Tuesday.

The Canadian awards have been allocated for the journalists belonging to English, Urdu, print, electronic media.

He said Canadian High Commission with the support and consultation of eminent Pakistani journalists had designed these awards for Pakistani journalists who have rendered services for highlighting issues of public interests and upholding democracy. Canadian High Commission with the jury of the eminent journalists will evaluate the applications to select the winners for the awards. — A Reporter

Prizes distributed

FATEHJANG, March 13: Students who have taken different positions in tehsil and district levels speech and debate contests were awarded prizes in a ceremony held at Government Boys Secondary School on Tuesday.

MPA Ch Sher Ali Khan, while speaking as the chief guest, said that the Punjab government was according top priority to the education sector. Deputy District Education Officer (M) Mohammad Naseem Akhtar Siddique also addressed the participants. — Correspondent

52 public transporters fined

ISLAMABAD, March 13: Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA) imposed fine on 52 public service vehicles during checking on I.J. Principal Road on Tuesday.

Deputy Commissioner Amir Ali Ahmed received a number of complaints against transporters for not completing the designated routes and overcharging the passengers. He directed ITA official Khawaja Maqbool Mustafa to take stock of the situation.

Following the instructions, the ITA imposed Rs28,000 fine on the drivers of 52 public transport vehicles for violating the routes, overcharging and misbehaving with passengers. Some transporters were also found involved in plying their vehicles without permits. — Staff Reporter

Butcher arrested

RAWALPINDI, March 13: On the directives of District Coordination Officer (DCO), General Manager Slaughter House Sihala raided a butcher shop in Qasimabad and confiscated 240kg meat.

The butcher was arrested by Naseerabad police on Tuesday for selling meat of dead animals. — APP
