Man, son buried alive

GUJAR KHAN, March 1: A man and his son were buried alive when a huge lump of soil fell on them as they were digging earth about 12 kilometres away from here.

Their bodies were retrieved by locals and later on shifted to tehsil headquarters (THQ) hospital for autopsy.

According to locals Mohammad Hayat and his son Khyzir Hayat used to earn livelihood by digging earth and delivering it to villagers on payment with the help of their donkey.

On Thursday afternoon, as they were working in the nearby digging site, an earthen lump fell on them and they were buried under it along with their donkey. — Correspondent

Woman, daughter found dead

ATTOCK, March 1: Bodies of a missing woman and her daughter were found near Ghazi Barotha hydropower project of Attock Saddar police station. On the information of some locals, police came and shifted the bodies to hospital for postmortem on Wednesday evening.

According to police Dilafza Bibi, a resident of Bahdur village reported to Hazro police station three days back that Zar Bibi, wife of Mehmood Khan along with her daughter Nausheen Bibi went to district jail to see a relative who was detained there but did not return home on which police and relatives started searching them but in vain.

On Wednesday evening, the slaughtered bodies of the women were found near the hydropower project. — Correspondent

Police arrest two swindlers

ISLAMABAD, March 1: Shahzad Town police arrested two alleged swindlers who looted people after intoxicating them, police said on Thursday.

The swindlers made an attempt to loot a taxi driver after giving him an intoxicated meal but before becoming unconscious the driver sensed their intention and with help of passersby captured them. Later police were informed who reached the spot and took the accused in custody. — Staff Reporter

11 policemen promoted

ISLAMABAD, March 1: As many as 11 officers of capital police were promoted to next rank here on Thursday, police said.

Promotions were given to six sub-inspectors (SI) and five assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) on recommendations of the departmental promotion committee headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police Headquarters Ahmad Mukarram.

The committee promoted SI Mohammad Aslam, Haider Ali, Sajid Abbas, Ikramul Haq, Maqsood Ahmad, and Abdul Rauf to the rank of Inspector.

Likewise five ASI including Azhar Mehmood, Mohammad Badsha, Sher Ahmed and Mohammad Rashid were promoted to the rank of SI. — Staff Reporter

14 outlaws arrested

ISLAMABAD, March 1: Capital police arrested 14 outlaws from different areas of the city and recovered liquor, narcotics and weapons from them, a police spokesman said on Thursday. The arrested outlaws were identified as Sohail Mehmood, Zeeshan Nasir, Gulfraz Ajayab, Mohammad Naeem, Ghufran, Sanam Bibi, Farman Ullah, Abid Masih, Masood Masih, Kamran, Tariq Abbas, Asad Khan, Mohammad Minhas and Usman Kareem. The police recovered 2.3kg charas, 44 bottles of liquor, a Kalashnikov, two pistols, 100 rounds and stolen valuables from their possession.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohammad Yousaf Malik appreciated the police performance and directed them to step up action against anti-social elements.— Staff Reporter

Man killed on M-1

TAXILA, March 1: One person was killed while his companion was critically injured on Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1) in limits of Hassanabdal police station on Thursday.

Police sources said Jahanzeb Khan along with Dildar Khan was going from Islamabad to Peshawar in a car (LH-3849). When they approached Burhan Interchange their vehicle overturned and fell in a road-side ditch.

As a result, Jahanzeb Khan died on the spot while Dildar Khan was inured who was rushed to tehsil headquarters (THQ) hospital Hassanabdal from where he was referred to district headquarters (DHQ) hospital Rawalpindi owing to his critical condition. — Correspondent

Grant for refugees

ISLAMABAD, March 1: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will receive a grant of $12.8 million from the Japanese government to continue its project to support the refugee-affected and hosting areas (RAHA) located in the vicinity of Peshawar-Torkham Expressway.

The project which was signed here on Thursday at the Economic Affairs Division, will improve basic community infrastructure and livelihood besides rehabilitating the environment and enhancing social cohesion.

The new project is an extension of the Japanese-funded programme costing $12 million for sustainable development to facilitate peace-building and social cohesion in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. — Our Reporter
