KARACHI, Feb 28: An anti-terrorism court on Tuesday indicted a suspect in a policeman's murder case.

The suspect, Matiullah, has been booked and arrested for his alleged involvement in killing a police constable, Moosa Khan, and wounding Assistant Sub-Inspector Aslam Khattak within the remit of the Mehmoodabad police station in May 2010.

Judge Ghulam Mustafa Memon of the ATC-III read out the charges against the accused. However, the suspect pleaded not guilty.

The court summoned all prosecution witnesses with a direction to record their statements on March 15.

According to the prosecution, on May 25, 2010 the accused along with their absconding accomplices had attacked a police team in the Mehmoodabad area, killing a constable and wounding an ASI.

A case (FIR 223/2010) was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 324 (attempted murder), 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

Man jailed for three years

A judicial magistrate sentenced on Tuesday a man to three years in prison for carrying an unlicensed weapon.

The police booked Umair Khan under Section 13-D of the Pakistan Arms Ordinance in Jan 2009 at the Gizri police station.

Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Jahangir Khan also imposed a fine Rs15,000 and in case of non-payment he would have to suffer an additional three-month imprisonment.

The police arrested Umair and Mohammad Ali Hajano in Jan 2009 and found illicit weapons in their custody.

A case against accused Hajano under Section 13-D of the Arms Ordinance is also pending trial before the court.

Both the men were booked in over 30 cases. However, they have so far been acquitted in seven cases.

Sexual assault case

A court sentenced on Tuesday a man to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a boy.

The court found Yousuf Khan guilty of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old boy within the remit of the Aziz Bhatti police station in September 2009.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 and in case of non-payment the accused would have to undergo an additional three-month imprisonment.

Assistant Additional District and Sessions Judge (east) Sarwat Sultana pronounced her verdict after recording the evidence of witnesses and final arguments from both sides.

The court in its verdict ruled that the victim and other witnesses had supported the case of the prosecution and their testimonies were corroborated by medical evidence.

A case (FIR 386/2009) was registered against the accused under Sections 377 (unnatural offences) of the Pakistan Penal Code on a complaint of the victim's mother at the Aziz Bhatti police station.

The accused was present in court on bail and following the pronouncement of the verdict he was taken into custody and sent to jail to serve out the remainder of his sentence.
